Hi, Dave,

Not having toe tapped for a long time, my eclectus, Oscar, had a major episode earlier this week. He was experiencing leg spasms. His legs were springing up and down and hitting his perch. He kept falling over.
I contacted Laurella Desborough's Eclectus Centre. They are experts on the subject, and they were very supportive and helpful.
In Oscar's case, they believe that he had too much added Vitamin A in food build up in his liver until finally his liver could not handle it anymore, resulting in muscle spasms. I had to make changes to Oscar's diet. I eliminated all pellets and have stopped feeding him pasta.
Now, five nights after his initial seizure, Oscar's spasms have settled down to a strong toe tap.
I hope you're able to find the cause of Max's toe tapping. I don't think the sugar in his fruit would contribute to it; though, each eclectus is different, and I seem to recall some members saying their eclectus toe tapped after eating too many grapes.
If you are able to get hold of any milk thistle, that is recommended to feed to an eclectus during a toe tapping episode, as it detoxes their liver.
Other sources of calcium include dark green vegetables, such as broccoli, and cuttlefish grated over their food.
I hope Max makes a speedy recovery.

Hi, Dave,

How's Max's tapping? I find that Oscar's gets worse at night, especially when he's restful. When he was having the leg spasms, it wouldn't even settle down during the day.
I'm in Australia, and I pick milk thistle out of the garden. If you have an aloe vera plant, you can give Max the leaves to eat or extract the juice from a leaf and put in his drinking water, as aloe is also meant to be beneficial.
I'm not sure about the products in the link you provided. I think any from a health food store should be safe. I know that Avitech has a range of herbal products for birds.
Do you feed any seed to Max? Some seeds are vitamised. I bought some bird seed for Oscar once to give him in the evenings not realising that it contained added vitamins. After a week of eating it, he started toe tapping. I removed the seed and he stopped toe tapping.
From past experience, I found that, depending on the severity of the episode, toe tapping can last anywhere from a couple of days to a week or longer. I'm sure Max will recover soon.

just in the last 3 hours it has just about subsided
i do use an eclectus feed mix,and the fresh bowl of chop everyday.
to be honest, i as a human i hate veggies and eat very few, but i do like fruit.
i think i may be giving them too much fruit could be the biggest part of this im cutting him off the fruit for a few days, then will bring a small amount back into play.
1 very small spot on 1 toe a just slightly raw going to dab it with neo sporin for a few days and i hope it don't get infected.and see what the vet tells me tomorrow.
tried to get a hold of the Aviary i bought him from yesterday just to find out they have went bottom's up. i had a feeling it would happen they where good with the birds but customer service was very bad, there business hours where few and far between. they where always late at opening. and to top that off they where way to friendly with the customers, hell i did not like going in there to much just due to the hugging crap that was always forced on you.

Cutting back on fruit probably wouldn't hurt, since eclectus are supposed to have less fruit than vegetables. Nonetheless, it really sounds like Max is on an excellent diet, and it's hard to see how food can be contributing to his toe tapping. I've read that toe tapping can also be linked to a vitamin deficiency, especially Vitamin A, which is high in orange coloured vegetables.
Hopefully, your vet will get to the root of it. Let us know how Max gets on.

made him a sweet potato, butternutt squash, bell pepper, broc, and kale chop
topped with a dose of hot pepper seed for seasoning.
he is down to a light tick on one toe bout every 20 seconds
i sure hope it is on the way out, no sleep lastnite, need to get some tonight.
seems he is able to sleep even with the small tic. everything else with him is just as normal as can be. tried to fly out the windows a couple times, and made it up the hallway for the first time. i have the drapes so he hit's them and grabs hold and can't hit the windows hard.
he looks for windows to try and get out, think im going to clip him again with a move coming up and all that goes along with that i would sure hate for him to catch some wind and be off. will let him become flighted in another year

Max's vet visit was great he is in fine health and in great shape
the toe tapping has now stopped so that bout is over.
was told to cut way back on the fruit and the episode was more then likely
a reaction to the pomagranet so no more of that. make it a regular thing to do the crushed eggshell in the chop a couple days a month for both Lily and Max. the milk thistle is a good thing to keep around for an eclectus and was told to get this.Milk Thistle / Dandelion Alcohol-free Herbal extract.

so all is good for Max, the wife and i where both able to sleep last night and Max had a long night covered and he is back to 100% normal ripping and tearing all over his cage and playstand just a chattering up a storm.
these thing are so smart i have never tried to teach him my name or tried to teach him to say" come on dave let me out " but he has put it together on his own and i will hear it every now and again. sorry i dont post vids of all his antics but ever since i tried to harness train, he relates the camera due to the straps as the harness and runs like hell and just clams up even with the straps removed from the camera.i view it as a sign of stress so the camera does not come out in front of him any longer. im also going to work on a lighting system that will be safe for both cages just got to put it together in the head first.

Just seeing this thread. So glad Max's toe-tapping has stopped!

Yes, fruits alone can definitely contribute to the dreaded toe-tapping. Sometimes they can have a reaction to one fruit in particular, other times it can be a reaction to a combination of fruits. The latter proved to be the case with Jolly. I once gave him chop that contained blueberries AND blackberries, and he started tapping away! Since I knew that was the only thing I did different, I just threw away that batch and never used those two at the same time again.

He has never tapped since.
