Hello everyone, so I currently got a female Electus as of last night, it was very sudden but her owner felt like she couldn’t give this beautiful bird the proper care so i took her in. I need to go buy a cage today because I want a bigger cage for her but as of right now she is in a travel crate and she has not come out. I’ve left the door open for her and put food and water on the inside of it so she can drink and eat without fear.

I’ve been up all night, it is 7:30AM here and I’m searched up everything I could find on Electus and even went through most of the threads on this site that talk about Electus and their diets. I chopped up some grapes, lettuce, bananas, and carrots for her as of now because I was told she eats those and she has dried fruit as well. This electus was weaned maybe 2 weeks ago onto fruits, pellets, and seeds so i am working on the healthy diet today.

Should I just leave her in the crate or should I take off the top of the crate so she can look around? She is a little hostile because she doesn’t know me but she was born in August of 2017 and is still a baby.

Let her decide if she wants to come out or not, don't force it. She's in a new environment, new owner, everything is super scary.

Getting a new cage is of course top priority.

Once she's in her new cage, I'd keep the doors shut. Let her sit and observe. Talk with her. Go at her pace.

Good luck :)

Good advice given above from one of our ekkie experts, I only want to add...

it's eclectus, there's another C in there. I made the same mistake for months (if not years) before I realized it's pronounced: ee-clec--tus. Not ee-lec-tus. If you own one you should know now before you get haggled down the road :)

Thank you for correcting me on that. I can never really pronounce it correctly because I have a bit of a filipino accent with certain words so I think I spelled it the way i say it but thank you so much for correcting me! :)

I got her a more healthy diet with some seeds and fruits and veggies on the that are dried. I’m also feeding her fresh fruits and veggies but she is still in the traveling crate and it has been maybe 16 or more hours now. I really want to get her out of the crate or help her out but she lunges at me. That is why i wanted to know if I should take the top off of it and see if she’ll walk around. I’m not going to completely remove her from the crate, just take off the top so she can see everyone and everything.

I just bought a new big cage for her that I haven’t unloaded from the car because it was raining and I have some new toys and her old toys I was given as well. Should I maybe put the traveling crate at the bottom of the cage and wait for her to come out? I’m getting worried because she hasn’t drank anything or really eaten anything except for what I put in the carrier. She is currently in the living room which is the most busiest place in the house, she doesn’t want to come out of that crate at all though.

Okay I’m going to unload the cage from the car and set it up maybe seeing her old toys will help her settle in. Thank you so much for this advice and help.

She is in the cage! I got it out of the car and set it up with some of her old toys and new and she is now sitting calmly and happily on the new java perch inside of her cage. She drank water first and now she’s eating! I feel relieved!

Sounds like everybody's got it covered here. Glad she's starting to settle - usually you start to see their personality properly in a few weeks.

The biggest thing I found early on is that it's really hard to tell if they're... OK. I mean their physical signs are all good and everything but how do you know if they're alright when they're just sitting and staring at you? lol

This will get better, my eckie now enjoys getting into everything she's not supposed to, and she is very good at demonstrating how she feels.

So if it feels like you've got a messy, poopy stuffed toy for a while it's normal. You'll have a can-opener before long :)

Good luck! And I'm joining the pics train. PICCCSSSS

Does anyone know how to post pics in a reply from mobile by any chance?? The last owner had this beautiful girl for 2 months and now I feel priveledged to have her. My avian vet says to bring her in maybe in a month or two just for a checkup.

She is sitting ontop of the cage now, she’s relaxing a bit and surprisingly she has made kissie noises back at me.

Just an update on my baby Eclectus, she seems a bit aggressive this morning. My family had reached out to pet her last night when I wasn’t here and she lashed out. This Eclectus used to be in a home where she made friends with sun conures and cockatiels and I have a sun conure that she seems very interested in. I’m starting to wonder if I should keep her out in the living room for the next week or move her into the room where my sun conure is

Any suggestions? She is also a tiny bit aggressive because she wasn’t held much or anything really. She just sat ontop of the cage at her old home and that was it, there wasn’t much interaction between her and humans.

hang some toys all around on the outside of the cage to give her a reason to climb around. Eclectus are good family birds but all of these changes are coming so quickly at her she is going to be a little scared and cranky. bonding is a funny thing it is just not something that happens over night, i look for it to be a whole life event myself. till you get some kind of bond going with her it is not a good idea for folks to just wonder up on her and even let her out the cage, will let you know their bite can be wicked with the grinding and slicing at the same time. i did a ton of research before buying Max and to be honest i steered clear of the female due to seems a lot of my research pointed to the females being way more moody, and aggressive then the males, along with a few nitemare storys about binding eggs and reproductive troubles, as a matter of fact i have always went for male pets due to reproductive troubles i have had with different pets.
i do have a female Amazon, but she picked me it is her world i just feed her,and make sure she is well taken care of.

She does roam around the outside of the cage, she likes to sleep ontop of it because that was how it was in her old home. This Eclectus and I have met before, we did bond a bit but I had not visited her for two weeks because her owner had decided to keep her(she was discussing with me rehoming this particular bird before), after the two weeks something came up and the person had decided to give me this beautiful girl. She is only 7 months old, I just feel bad because there is nothing more I can do for her. Her nails have also never been cut and are super sharp, they look like hawk talons almost.

The breeder that this Eclectus was bought from charged $1,400 and claimed that she was handfed but when the bird came home to her previous owner from the airport she was not eating and just wanted to eat the baby formula from what i’m aware of. This girl just got weaned maybe a week ago from the formula to seeds, fruits, and pellets. In the time the previous owner had her, she was able to be picked up and cuddled a bit. Although the previous owner did towel her to feed her the formula and kinda tried to keep her restrained. I honestly don’t know how to explain everything else but I think this girl has gone through trauma.

This girl is a little hostile towards me but not so much as other people. I just want to do what is good for her. I ditched the pellets and got her on a healthier diet.
