Newspaper Shortage!

Hi Everyone!

It's been a while since I posted. Due to work deadlines I've had to push back from the computer a bit. Anyway, I always line the bottom of Oliver's cage with newspaper that my husband would bring home from work. I never thought the day would come when people rarely if ever purchased physical papers but the day came and I am bone dry on paper. I went to the local stores and gas stations and zip. What do you use? Or if papers still exist where?

You have options. I’ve seen on drs. Foster and smith they offer a paper liner. Alternatively you can get crumbled paper liner from a pet store

Last resort, get a newspaper subscription! A friend of ours got an online subscription for the Washington post, and got a discount for getting a hard copy delivered. So he set his address for our house so we would get the Saturday and Sunday paper.

I get the paper liners from Foster & Smith. They’re excellent.

My family still gets the newspaper at least once a week so I have that but you can always ask neighbors and such for paper too

This is a reality as newspapers forget what their roll has been historically and as a result loss their customer base. We full search our friends and family members and are just getting enough to keep the cage bottom covered.

The paper is available from Big Box Office Supply stores (order online only). Its the same metric size as newspaper, but without printing. Its use is for packaging glassware, etc... If you have to take the box up a flight of stairs, best to have a helper around when delivered. Cost wise, it's more expensive.

Watch for deals for your local or a national newspaper's online service that includes a greatly discounted delivered 'paper' version. As stated above, there are deals as they work hard to keep their 'print' side viable for their advertisers to continue to use them. Be prepaid to drop the 'paper' service when their pricing reverts to 'full.'

Many small community newspapers still get it and are a joy to read, and are commonly printed and delivered once a week. Our cottage in located in one of those rural areas and we get it delivered year around. Sad when regional papers are dying because they have failed to understand or care about their base, while the rural papers are adding readership.

Wax Paper. Been using it for 42 years.

We're in a rural area where we haul our own trash and recyclables to the transfer station. The guys there are great about grabbing a stack of newspaper for the cage every once in a while.

Hitting a recycling station is a good idea! I still get 3 or 4 ‘local’ papers thrown in my driveway per week!
An option- a roll of coated wall paper. Cut to size, and reused! There was someone on here years ago who posted about using it. She kept several stacked in the bottom of the cage, and pulled the top one daily. She stacked them until it was time to clean the load. The plastic wall paper cleans real easy! Remember, not prepasted!

What a wealth of ideas! My ol' man still enjoys the NY Times Sunday Edition. If I'm judicious, that suffices, but he keeps theatening to go digital, so I'm grateful for these options!

We use white butcher paper.
It's available in different sizes and we purchase from restaurant supply houses.
Price is very reasonable, easy to see if there is anything wrong with droppings, and easy to clean up.

I don't have any issues finding tons of local and national newspapers at my local Sheetz convenience stores, or any other convenience stores, I don't even pay for the ones I line my cages with, I just grab a ton of the free ones, like the Bargain Sheet, Ad Bargain, AutoTrader, you know, the penny-saver ones that are free. I grab a huge stack of them for free once a week from a convenience store...and Barnes and Nobles have tons of national newspapers for sale every day.

Also, wax paper works very well and is inexpensive, and the droppings tend to stick to wax paper for easy clean-up.

I would not use any type of "bedding", such as the Carefresh crumbled paper bedding, only because it can lead to hormonal and/or nesting behaviors.

Check with your local new car dealerships. Many of them supply newspapers for their customers to read while they wait.

I get unread newspapers from the local Honda dealer.

It doesn't hurt that our local paper has only been good for wrapping fish or lining cages for many years.

I posted a plea on my village Facebook page and quite a few people got in touch. I was thinking of linking with a local business to collect papers they might buy for customers at the end of week or something, but in the end a lady that delivers the local paper said I could have the copies she doesn't need and a lady that breeds puppies had huge piles of papers her neighbours collect for her. Haven't had to use anything else since. Worth a try!

I'm kind of lucky. My local convenience store will give me his "old" newspapers,ones that didn't sell the day before...all he has to do is cut the top part off,where the newspaper name is,and the paper reimburses him..ask your local store(s) who do sell papers,if you can get the old ones.

another good place to check for newspapers are estate agents, they often have some sort of material of places they have for sale and typically over here they're printed on newspaper
