Winston (Eclectus)
If you have seen my previous posts it revolves around me going to Florida to bring my dad's Eclectus to Canada. I inherited my father's cherished Winston upon my father's passing. It was a year in the making to ensure all my paperwork was in order. I feel blessed that I found an awesome foster momma for him as when I saw him when I first arrived in Florida, he looked so happy and healthy. Here is a summary of our 16 hour travel from Florida to

Summary of Trip:

1. TSA agents were awesome in Fort Myers. No stress, positive experience. I asked for a private room and there was no issue.
2. Flight one: Winston was awesome.
3. Flight two: Winston was hilarious. He was laughing and saying hello.
4. Port of Entry in Seattle: The officer was fantastic. Looked at my papers, took some pictures, and stamped his export as cleared. :)
5: Flight three: 40 minute flight to Victoria. Poor boy was exhausted. He was quiet but started to look a little stressed.
6: Customs: Pretty much how I thought it would go. They needed to confirm a couple of things, but gave us the thumbs up after 10 minutes. I had a stack of papers, so obviously I had done my research.
7. New Home: He was nervous to get out of his carrier, so I put his carrier in his cage and he got out. He seems to like his mansion. Dogs are interested in him so Winston is a bit nervous. But, he is laughing and talking a little bit.
8. The next morning: Fed him breakfast, took him out of the cage to explore the family room, gave him a slice of banana as a treat, and he went to the playtop on his cage and watched The Backyardigans. :)

For anyone that is bringing a bird from the U.S. to Canada my advice is to do your research and get a stack of papers to show. I had things I did not really need like a health certificate and proof of ownership, but it showed that I did
my research. And, get names of people who have given you information. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is your go to agency in Canada. They helped me a lot! Show you did your research and your process will go smoother.

I will post pictures soon as my phone won't allow me to copy the image links.

Winston is officially a Canadian! ❤️

Welcome to Canada! :D

Sorry to veer off-topic, but is the process the same for the other way around? If I ever find work in the US I read that birds have to be boarded for 1 month before entry?

In any case I'm glad it worked out for Winston!!

I am not 100% sure, but I know that when I spoke to authorities in the U.S. and Canada they have all mentioned how getting a bird into Canada is easier than anywhere else. Going into the states, I remember reading something about a quarantine but not sure if it was for a specific circumstance. I would think you would need a CITES export from Canada and import papers from the U.S. I have included a link to the agency that oversees birds. Even entering Canada, I needed to follow their regulations.

By involving your Certified Avian Vet (CAV) early in the process that helps with documentation. The month prior to leaving Canada, you will hold your Parrot in your home with onsite visits by your CAV proving that the proper precautions are followed. The CAV signs specific documents and you will be golden. As noted as part of the above Thread, the more prep time, the better!

Congratulations Winston!

FINALLY!!! Welcome home, Winston! What an adventure you both have had!

This entire story and your previous thread is the best example I've ever seen as to preparing to bring a bird or any pet/animal into another country. You started months in advance, you did your research, and you gathered every single document you could possibly get. This is the only reason your trip went so very smoothly.

And even though the process is very different depending on what country you're trying to take your bird/animal into, the bottom-line is exactly the same: START VERY EARLY, DO MUCH RESEARCH, GET EVERYTHING, DON'T LEAVE ANYTHING TO CHANCE!

I'm glad Winston is settling-in nicely to his new forever-home. He's a very lucky bird to have you as his new parront!

Congratulations on Winston's successful emigration! You really have proven such a dedicated and thorough parront. I'm sure things will go extremely well as Winston acclimates himself into your new home.

As for photos, if you're having any issues be sure to check post #51 on page 6 in this thread: http://www.parrotforums.com/technical-support/6287-how-post-pictures-6.html for the updated process.

LOL

He has already learned to say "Eh!" and he has just said "Sorry." My family
jokes with me about the "sorry" as us Canadians apparently apologize a lot. Gotta love Tim's!

Thanks so much! I am aiming to post pictures tonight. Winston is doing wonderful. He is quite the character! Every day is says something new. He has a handful of voices he mimics. He even whispers: Are you asleep? Kinda eerie!

Thank you so much. I truly think it went so smoothly as I researched and made sure I wasn't leaving anything out. So many phone calls but worth it. Having all the papers was key. It is better to have more than less!

Just wanted to do an update on my sweet boy. It has been three weeks in his new environment. I think he is settling in nicely despite his rough few years.

Food: He loves it! He enjoys all peppers, whole wheat noodles, corn on the cob, cranberries, watermelon, and cucumbers the most. He nibbles on Tropican pellets and his seed mix. I limit the pellets and seed but he does enjoy it.

Talking: Wow! He has a huge vocabulary. He has several voices he uses, too. And, he is already saying new things in my voice. So sweet. He also sleep talks which is adorable. He is now practicing singing like our canary and barking like our dogs.

Playtime: He doesn't seem to play with toys, though I am slowly trying different things. But, he loves to be on the playtop of his cage. He prefers to hang out and be with his flock.

Screaming: I have been working on him not screaming for me and I think it is working. He only really squawks if he sees a predator bird outside or before bedtime. Oh. And if he is out of food.

Behaviour: He is a sweet boy. The only thing he will do is if you are giving him food he will growl and peck at the cage. He has been through a lot so I can see where this might be coming from. Cage possessive.

Winston is a gem. :)
