Leg Band Identification - HELP!

Hello!

I re-homed a male eclectus about 4 years ago. They didn't have a ton of information on him; just that his original owner passed away, and he was willed to someone who didn't really want him, so they brought him in for consignment.

I have asked multiple people, including the vet, if they could get any information of his leg band so I could know an approximate age.

His leg band says, "FX 5791". I'm now wondering if that means his hatch date is 5/7/91...

Thoughts?

I did read somewhere that FX typically stands Florida Exotics (I think someone on the forums also was searching for something similar). As for the numbers, it all depends apparently - anywhere from the year to the number of birds produced from the aviary.

I hear there are a few yahoo groups and other sources online to help dig it up, but I'd suggest you go right to the source of the aviary themselves if possible.

I traced the Rb's band by asking bird clubs in the state where I knew he had been bred. It took some time, but it worked.
If your first guess is Florida, maybe start there?

Nothing to add to the good advice above except to cosign. What you see on those bands is really dependent on the individual breeder. For some the numbers identify groupings so as to avoid familial pairings. For others, dates. Really, they could mean just about anything. So as suggested, you'll have to do some leg work.
