Is whistling within a comfortable vocal range?

Cairo the Ekkie!
Simple at that question above!

Background, my partner likes whistling to Cairo. Cairo does see it as my partner's unique call for Cairo. He's been trying to get Cairo to whistle back, and Cairo has been practicing quite a bit, receiving treats whenever he does whistle.

I just worry because sometimes I hear the wind pass through his vocal chords (without making a whistling sound) - it seems that sometimes he strains to whistle. And all of today, he's just mostly whistling successfully. But at the same time, the standard ekkie call isn't so high-pitched, but more in the range of standard human speaking.

Coming from a music background, I know straining your vocal chords is never good in the long run. Just wondering if he genuinely is straining to reach the high pitch whistling sounds and potentially damaging his vocal chords just to please us. Or if he's perfectly fine and I'm just a worry-wart.

I don’t think it strains their voice at all given how frequent this mimic is.

My quakers whistles with no problems or weird sounds. So I don't know if that is a. Ekkies question. Or when he vomited he aspirated and is starting to show he has a respiratory infection now. Aspirated pneumonia takes up to a couple of weeks after the event to rear it's ugly head. You can try laying you ear to his neck and both sides if his body to see if you hear any harsh sound, or whistles, squeaks when he breaths. But you can't always hear them. I'm like you just extra worked since his illness...

I was going to say that ;)
Parrots have a syrinx not a larynx.

So they have a huge advantage being able to make a set of sounds per lung instead of just with a set of both lungs together like we do.

Parrots do not have vocal chords.

As I have said before...I always learn something everyday from this place.
Thanks for that bit of info Al :)

hahaha do not wait to speak up!!
- I did not know till last sunday when I went to a lecture (I have a teaching CAV) about their anatomy&functions. It *so* helps to see pictures (and a few animations)- I sort of knew they had no vocal cords, but no clue how they managed it exactly.

So they can pretty much make any sound they like without damaging anything (and if it would they are clever enough not to make that sound again).

You have a teaching CAV giving lectures? Kinda jealous at the moment. Just a one time thing? Or a series?

I wish it was a series!! It was so much fun!

My CAVs work&teach at the University of Utrecht (so my parrots never see just the vet, but are usually surrounded by students as well) and they get invited to give lectures a lot.
That sunday one of the larger petshops had their anual "parrot and parakeet-day", so 3 wonderfull lectures, bargains etc to be had in the parrot-part of the shop ( a prequel-black-friday) and loads of parrotlovers from all over the country.
So I followed them to the Hague, and got one on plucking (Dr. Yvonne van Zeeland), missed the one on nutrition (oops, talking/shopping too much) from the LaFeber-man and caught the one about anatomy and function ( Dr. Yvonne van Zeeland & Dr. Nico Schoemaker) -> the best day in a long time, I learned so much more. :)

Gah! I love Utrecht! Gorgeous town and amazing Domkerk - I went crazy over the carillon!! And it's so on the cutting edge too with the university. So jealous of your opportunities there!!

Please do share what you learned! It'll help a lot of ignorant folks like me :)
