He flew to me!

Tucker just flew to me for the first time! He was in the cage, door open, and I was in the kitchen. (Out of his sight some 50 feet away) My son called out, "he's flying!" and I turned around to see where he was heading. It was straight towards me so I held my arm out for him and he landed on it! I'm so happy, and after the somewhat sloppy landing, Tucker looked very proud of himself, and, well... Tuckered! Lots of praise immediately followed, of course! Wish I was prepared for it and had a treat at the ready, but no such luck. I think he got the idea though

Yup, he's getting the hang of it. I think I might have created a monster lol! Repeat performance 3 times this morning already. He's sticking the landings much better today now that he knows my arm will be there when he arrives. A month ago, his flights were very infrequent, and maxed at about 5 feet, and only downward. Just enough to break his fall. A few new feathers and some encouragement, and he's almost doing laps around the house. Proud dad right here!

I can't believe he's only been here 5 1/2 weeks. Feels like he's been part of life forever. So much progress in such a short time. Love my little guy!

So very true! What an amazing feeling it is to see your bird flying purposefully to you for the first time. I'm so happy for you and Tucker!

I love it! And just you watch as he gains confidence and begins to experiment with different flight approaches. Beautiful to behold! (I see he's currently into the full speed/sudden stop approach. That's one of Jolly's faves!)

Yup, his confidence is growing by leaps and bounds. The landings are getting better every time. He has successfully landed on the table and edge of the sink without falling off or in several times now.

Of course, now he doesn't want to stay on the cage when he's out, and flies to me every chance he gets!

I worked from home yesterday and he spent much of the day on his shower perch which I had stuck on the window next to me. He seemed really happy there.

Thank you! Oddly enough, he still has some of the clipped secondaries and a few broken tail feathers that he hasn't replaced yet. (Empty space in the middle of the tail) I can't believe he is doing this well like that. Can't wait 'til he gets more new ones!

I think he's really liking his flight abilities, and as they say, practice makes better. This morning he chose a new path to the kitchen, and got some real altitude. (by comparison) He went up over the beam between the rooms, about 10 feet up, and down to land on the curtain rod to look out the window. He's so proud of himself!

My little flying machine got special treat for part of the breakfast extravaganza following his grand performance... Birdie omelette with shell and broccoli. Yum!

I'm loving this thread so much! There is such obvious joy in a bird learning more and more about his or her ability to fly. It's always been second nature to Jolly since he was encouraged to fly as soon as he was able in his first home with one of our members, Laura (labell), but I had to teach Bixby as I'd bought him from a store that did not allow their birds to attempt flight at all within their business. As a result, he was never quite the natural flier that Jolly is.

But he never took flight for granted! Lol! Every new maneuver that he learned was followed up by this proud flourish of his tail that was unmistakably a show of joy and pride in what he'd accomplished! Hard to explain unless you've seen it, and I'm betting that you know exactly what I'm talking about. Nothing like it!

Btw, have I mentioned what a wonderful job you're doing with him?

I'm not sure if he was flighted before and re-learning, or figuring it out now. Previous owners kept him clipped so he could go out to the barn with them. They got him as a baby at 4 months.

He's definitely getting stronger. His early attempts resulted in panting when he landed, just for a few seconds. It sounded funny coming from a bird. Now he's just looking proud and ready for more. No more tuckered Tucker lol. I've created a monster!
