In light of Pickles recent guilt post: I haven’t really posted much about this on the forum, mostly suffering in silence mainly because I’ve been kinda lazy to address it*daily guilt*. but I’ve struggled off and on for a couple years with toe tapping to varying degrees with Parker.

My laziness in addressing it came from the perception that he’s on a phenomenal diet, what else can I possibly do? But I saw it again recently and put him on an elimination diet.

The culprit?

*DRUMROLL*

Freaking NUTRIBERRIES. The one thing I feed him that was enriched, I just never paid attention to just HOW enriched they were. I just accepted it was the one thing I gave him that had pellets that weren’t TOPs.

Those are being thrown out. But not before I learn a lesson. It has some specific stuff added: different types of B vitamins and vitamin D notably. I’m going to ID some fruits super rich in these, feed them to Parker and see what happens. (d I know comes from the sun, folks...i know, but there are some foods that are fortified with it, so can try those).

Huge relief! Not just for Parker and solving the mystery, but the guilt as well!

YAY!!! Congrats!

I saw Laurella commented in one of the Facebook groups about how nutriberries are bad, and I meant to ping you just in case (I totally forgot though, so doesn't really count haha). Glad you solved it, and Parker is happy with no toe-tapping!

Well yeah, they are garbage for any bird. You should see some of the ingredients! That’s a given from the start, but that’s why they are called treats.

And Yes I’m on that group as well. I struggle with her. I’ll give her her decades of Ekkie experiences, but some stuff comes through that make me respect her baby raising experience but not trust anything else she says. For example, she kept saying a few times that Vitamin A was a man made nutrient, I had to correct her on that.

That group is also insanely annoying with tagging her in almost every post - as if nobody on earth but her is able to answer questions. There’s a small sense of lack of self reliance and self trust among that group.

Yeah, I feel ya there. I'm part of most ekkie Facebook groups, but mostly scroll past them in my newsfeed. Some drama is just not worth it. I feel much safer reading from multiple sources and figuring out how to play it safe from there.

Do keep us up to date with your vitamin B and D tests! So far Cairo hasn't been toe-tapping (touch wood), but it's largely because I haven't really varied his chop much :/

And again, congrats to you and Parker!!

Just seeing this, Chris! Sweet!

I've never been a fan of those darned Nutriberries, but my dislike for them has always been more from a general nutritional standpoint. Great job narrowing it down to them as the tapping culprits insofar as Parker is concerned.

Crikey I never looked at the ingredience of those things! Hmmmm maybe I ought to cut them out of Amys diet? He doesn't get them daily ( once or twice a month, two or three berries as a treat) and I break one or two up every other month for Beebs (when he is out of millet) I thought they were "nutritional" for the fid's,hence the name NUTRAberries! lol.

Learn stuff everyday,don'tcha?
Happy to know you got it figured out Chris!:) and Doodles is doing better!

we have a pair of Eclectus. We have observed a very small amount of toe tapping. It was only minor and apeared to happen only in the hottest parts of summer/heatwave. I think it can possible have somthing to do with heat or a combination of Heat/Diet and possibly stress. at least in our case.

It’s surely possible. I forget thee fact trigger, but I remember someone posting about how something off the wall and unexpected like excessive heat or dry conditions was the trigger for their bird.

We still have so much to learn about this species.
