We will be getting a young eclectus male in a few weeks. I'm new to birds, but very motivated to be a good mom.

I think I've decided on a cage, the
Lonomea Lookout Double Playtop Large Bird Cage from Bird Cages for less.

I've ordered a seed sprouter so I can sprout him some seeds, and plan on following the recommendations for mostly veg/fruit, etc...

Now, what other accessories and toys and stuff do I need to look at, and sizes for toys, that confuses me? Toys to play with, foraging toys, perches, play stands... Help me spend money :)

Thanks!

Hi Snarlla, I just posted to your new members section regarding perches and toys. You won't have a problem spending money, forever. I rotate my fids toys as they are 'destroyed' and every week or so. My fids don't get much cage time and I still keep their toys rotated for independent play stimulation.

Do not buy plastic toys that can be destroyed and ingested. Do not buy bells or toys with bells that can be destroyed. My fids have indestructible bells. Do not buy unsafe metal toys due to metal toxicity risk. Use heaps of balsa wood toys - lots of destructive fun whilst grooming his beak. Macaw and Too wood is too hard for an Eclectus. They need softer wood toys.

Books, resources - you will probably find mixed opinions on trainers and training techniques. Use this forum for most of what you need for behaviour and harness training etc. No need for details on that here.

An Eclectus is a 'medium' sized parrot so harness size, perches and toys for this size is generally ok. My two must be piglets because I moved them up into large aviator harnesses as I didn't like the pull on the back wing zone. You won't have a full-sized boy yet so go for medium.

One step at a time....ensure the cage is set up and that you have the variety of toys available. You can even start preparing chop and freezing portions. Buy sweet potato, carrots and squash, blanche, cool, cut, and freeze. My fids get these veggies daily along with all of the other fresh veggies and berries, pomegranates, papaya, passion fruit etc......

Very helpful, thank you!

The clarification on the size for toys does help.

Do you know... do they like summer squash as well as the harder squashes? We eat a lot of zucchini. I wouldn't imagine that would need to be blanched when fresh, but obviously I don't know :)

No need to blanch zucchini. All pumpkin/squash plus seeds ok not blanched. I do this to eliminate spoil once squash cut. My two love 'pumpkin play time', a slice with seeds in. I always blanch sweet potato due to quick discoloration but it doesn't stop my two from 'sweet potato bobbing' when it is in water awaiting blanching.

You can buy the Chew toy for a bird, those are made of natural wood and it is safe for eclectic parrots.

Here he is! He was hatched either June 3 or 4th, shop lady said she'd have to check records, but it's one or the other. We should be able to take him home in a few weeks :)

I bet you can hardly wait to bring this little sweetie home! Any name for him yet?

I'm not sure. Suggestions abound and everyone has their favorite. I kind of like Bunji because it's (an) aboriginal word for friend or mate (buddy kind of mate), but then I also found out it is slang for a type of Australian home made... don't know if I can say it here... but you can google. Anyway, I kind of like that double meaning, but it also sounds like bungee, like bungee cords. That could work if he's bouncy, lol.

Then my husband wants to name him something based on a Zappa song. And I don't dislike Zappa, but he's not my favorite. He did suggest 'Peabody', like from Peabody and Sherman, which I liked a lot because I like those cartoons and he's green like a pea.

Anyway... we are totally undecided and he may not have a name until we have him home for a while and see what suits him.

Oh my, he is a cutie  so exciting!

So, please share which Zappa song, inquiry minds want to know? :D
Love Zappa, saw him play at a small theater in RI. My hubby, boyfriend at the time went to URI & got us 1st row dead center seats. I could have touched him.

My gold coin opinion, Bunji...I like the aboriginal term for mate...the double meaning doesn't matter. Are you in Australia?

I will have to ask him. He gave me a whole list of suggestions, lol. He's out of town right now. I will tell him about your concert adventure, I'm sure his head will explode. Personally, the only Zappa song I really LOVE is Joe's Garage.

Yep, that's a good one. :smile049:
Actually, I was the one who got hubby into Zappa. So, he got the tix more for me. However, that show did seal the deal. We had every one of his vinyls back in the day.

I went to visit yesterday and since they were running a little late I got to feed him his lunch. So that was cool.

I think we decided on a name. My son and I both said 'Beaker' at the same time and my husband loved it. Since we are all muppet fans and my husband and I are both scientists, it feels appropriate :) But we'll still have to see if it fits once he gets home.

I like the name Beaker! I commonly call my boy Tucker "beaker peeker" in the morning when he wakes up. He climbs down from his high sleeping perch and peeks under the blanket I cover his cage with. Usually a little whistle or beep/boop noise to get my attention, sticks the beak between the bars for morning greetings, beak rubs, and of course, freedom from the cage lol!

Your soon-to-be baby is absolutely adorable! Congratulations!

Congrats on your new boy!! My guy was born June 3rd or 4th (there were two of them so it depends which one we get). He will be coming home to me soon! I'm super excited as he is in another state and I haven't even met him yet but did get lots of pictures.
I have some toys that I bought and some toys that I made. I will be making a sea grass mat with different types of toys attached which I think will help me figure out what "type" of toys he likes.

You will love those candy-corn Beaker kisses...:)
