Young Eclectus coming soon, help me shop!

We will be getting a young eclectus male in a few weeks. I'm new to birds, but very motivated to be a good mom.

I think I've decided on a cage, the
Lonomea Lookout Double Playtop Large Bird Cage from Bird Cages for less.

I've ordered a seed sprouter so I can sprout him some seeds, and plan on following the recommendations for mostly veg/fruit, etc...

Now, what other accessories and toys and stuff do I need to look at, and sizes for toys, that confuses me? Toys to play with, foraging toys, perches, play stands... Help me spend money

Thanks!

Re: Young Eclectus coming soon, help me shop!

Hi Snarlla, I just posted to your new members section regarding perches and toys. You won't have a problem spending money, forever. I rotate my fids toys as they are 'destroyed' and every week or so. My fids don't get much cage time and I still keep their toys rotated for independent play stimulation.

Do not buy plastic toys that can be destroyed and ingested. Do not buy bells or toys with bells that can be destroyed. My fids have indestructible bells. Do not buy unsafe metal toys due to metal toxicity risk. Use heaps of balsa wood toys - lots of destructive fun whilst grooming his beak. Macaw and Too wood is too hard for an Eclectus. They need softer wood toys.

Books, resources - you will probably find mixed opinions on trainers and training techniques. Use this forum for most of what you need for behaviour and harness training etc. No need for details on that here.

An Eclectus is a 'medium' sized parrot so harness size, perches and toys for this size is generally ok. My two must be piglets because I moved them up into large aviator harnesses as I didn't like the pull on the back wing zone. You won't have a full-sized boy yet so go for medium.

One step at a time....ensure the cage is set up and that you have the variety of toys available. You can even start preparing chop and freezing portions. Buy sweet potato, carrots and squash, blanche, cool, cut, and freeze. My fids get these veggies daily along with all of the other fresh veggies and berries, pomegranates, papaya, passion fruit etc......

Very helpful, thank you!

The clarification on the size for toys does help.

Do you know... do they like summer squash as well as the harder squashes? We eat a lot of zucchini. I wouldn't imagine that would need to be blanched when fresh, but obviously I don't know

No need to blanch zucchini. All pumpkin/squash plus seeds ok not blanched. I do this to eliminate spoil once squash cut. My two love 'pumpkin play time', a slice with seeds in. I always blanch sweet potato due to quick discoloration but it doesn't stop my two from 'sweet potato bobbing' when it is in water awaiting blanching.

You can buy the Chew toy for a bird, those are made of natural wood and it is safe for eclectic parrots.

Here he is! He was hatched either June 3 or 4th, shop lady said she'd have to check records, but it's one or the other. We should be able to take him home in a few weeks
