Get the largest cage that you can afford. Our bird Sonny does not even have a cage, I built him a house that he sleeps in with a soft cloth on the bottom, he lays down and sleeps in it a couple of hours after dark. The rest of the time he is free to fly around the house, Mostly he goes back to poop on his perch near his house or on a perch where he can sit in a window and see outside. For car trips he has a perch between the front seats and an Aviator harness to go shopping etc. He can now lay on his back and do a " dead bird " for strangers as they hold him cupped in their hands. The last week he has learnt to be able to be thrown from one hand to the other while pretending to be dead. He flies outside with the wild birds each afternoon for about 30 minutes and is now considered one of the locals by magpies, galahs and corellas around here. Amazing bird !!!! The toys he likes the best are very large plastic balls with rattles in them. He chases them all around the floor and hangs from them if they are on rope. They seem to last about a month before he destroys them so you need a few. Never use very fine line to hang toys from as it could get caught around his neck or wings.

That looks suitable for a large parrot. Love the shape! Our cage is similar shaped and the “atrium” style top is a great place for our bird to roost at night. Our bird is also free range during the day. He is free to come and go as he pleases during all day, though he sleeps covered in his cage at night. That kind of trust to have a free range parrot takes time to build though;)

As for things on amazon, if you have food, toys, perches etc... provided for already, I suggest a bird backpack. They’re on the pricier side and might take your entire gift card, so if you need a lot of stuff, maybe not the best option, but if your just buying extras at this point, get a backpack! Seriously, it’s easier than a harness and taking your parrot out and about with you is one of the best things you can do for your bird. If you need the “basics”, I’d recommend getting toy making supplies for destructible toys (cheaper than ready made toys) and at least one or beginner acrylic foraging toys. Perch wise, get one cement perch, a perch long enough to span the entire cage and a few shorter perches. Try to get them in as varying widths and materials as possible. Birds feet need variety! Don’t wast your money on fancy sprouting mixes. You can get beans and seeds that will sprout in the bulk bins of your local grocer for way cheaper. Same goes for cooking mixes, nuts or anything else that can be bought at the grocery store in bulk. Mason jars with mesh cut to fit under the band work fine to sprout in, so no need for fancy sprouted either. A cheap dehydrator, on the other hand, can be extremely nice as store bought dehydrated fruits and veggies usually aren’t bird safe but most birds love dehydrated foods and you have to buy pricey versions at the health food store or can dehydrate your own for cheap.

The cage does look quite spacious. But the listing says 6 feet tall. To me, the photo does not look that tall, next to that window & baseboard heater. You might want to verify the actual interior size of the cage.

I don't see bar spacing listed. I guess I missed your other post but what Type Bird? You need to make sure the Bar Spacing is right for your bird.

As far as Amazon purchase -Id second the carrier suggestion. I got a Petsfit carrier and it is great. Otherwise, the card won't expire, just keep it a little while till you see what birdie needs.

Regarding the reply above from pickesandjesse. That is very unusual. Please do Not Plan to let your own bird fly free with wild birds, especially not to start with. That would be very dangerous.

I missed that part of the post:eek: To clarify on my post, my amazon is free range INDOORS only! And that level of freedom evolved organically over many years. He only goes outside in his backpack or on the feather tether. Usually the backpack though, because it really is more convenient and generally better than the harness.

i agree with that. We live in Australia so an Australian parrot is not unusual and he is surrounded by other parrots. Although we are south of his natural habitat he does come back sometimes after feeding on trees. Guess he copies what the other parrots are eating. He copies the sounds of magpies, rainbow lories and galahs too. We also let him out late afternoon and he gets his favorite food when he returns..... a fish oil gel !!!

Thank you guys! It wasn't quite 6 feet but its taller than me and I'm 5'9. We picked it up yesterday and its a WONDERFUL cage, it looks a lot bigger in real life. Besides vinegar is there any good/better way to disinfect it and SOME of the perches it came with?

Could you post a picture of the house you built? What wood did you use? Is it pre- treated?
