I just wanted to share the great news; I brought home Linus my baby eclectus last night. He's 9 weeks old now, and on 3 feedings a day, my co-worker was hand rearing him but I've now taken over. He's precious, but seems to really miss his sister, he whimpers if he's not being snuggled.]
He's eating his formula well, and picks at his bowl of mash/weaning foods between feedings. When he's not snuggling with me I got him a stuffed duck to snuggle to, but I'm sure he isn't fooled. My Sulpher Crested is not so happy about the new addition, she is very jealous when I'm near him, I'm sure she'll get over it, and I'm giving her lots of love with him nearby so she is getting closer to him even this morning than she would allow last night. Everything is going well so far. I do worry though when he makes his tiny whining noise if I'm not doing something wrong, but since he stops when he has company I'm assuming its a cry.

Spiritbird: I'm pretty sure I'm going to call him Linus, and being as I live in a studio apartment, unfortunately I'm not quarantining, but I do trust the source of my bird very much as he is a friend/coworker and I know the quality of cleanliness/care he gives his pets is equal to or greater than that he gives our patients at our animal ER daily :)

My boy Tobi is 6 months old already.. They grow so fast!!! Enjoy every minute. They do make baby noises when they are so young. I am thinking this is the noises he is making.

I just feel that I have to say that quarantining must ALWAYS be done, does not matter where the parrot came from even if it was your mom. Some diseases are not prevented by cleanliness or care, some are airborne and nobody in the world can stop them. It takes a good couple of weeks before some show symptoms and others even take longer. An older bird can sit for years and not show any symptoms because they have a strong immune system - it is the complete opposite for babies who have no defence.

Linus is a beautiful name and hand feeding and caring for him while so young insures an indescribably strong bond between you. Congratulations.:D

So when my co-worker entrusted linus's care to me the other day he said Linus was on a 3x a day schedule for feedings, 8am, 3pm, and 11pm. I fed him at 8am, then at 4pm, then at 9pm I checked on him and he was begging and his crop was empty so I fed him again, then just now at 3am again his crop was empty/begging so I fed him a 4th time. Will it hurt to offer him these 4 feedings a day? He seems to have no interest in his bowl of pellets/cereal/veggies/formula mash at this point unless I hand pieces to him.

Wildheart: I don't feel I can call the situation a quarentine despite my best efforts to keep them as far apart from eachother and wash my hands between them as I live in a studio apartment, and as you said, things can be airborn.

Did your co-worker tube feed him? How are you feeding him?
Tim had been syringe feeding him, I've been doing the same. He's 310grams, I'm feeding 36-42cc a feeding (Until his crop is full, but not too tight.) Tim had said that Linus was picking at his food in-between feedings but I am suspicious that only the female was as I have seen no evidence of it.

When my baby just arrived he was tube fed 3 times a day and was 8 weeks old. I immediately changed it to syringe feeding, very messy but much safer and it caused a strong bond between us. For the first few days, I did feed him more than 3 times a day because you just can not get the whole 15ml in with a syringe and it does tire them some.

When he was 9 weeks old I started spoon feeding him mashed veggies like sweet potato and butternut during the day. It took a lot of patience before he realized what to do with it but when he finally took a taste he gulped it down. I held the teaspoon over his food dish and lowered it until it was inside the dish and he started eating straight out of the dish. I still gave him the formula in the mornings and evenings, at 6:30 in the morning and 6 in the afternoon, he went to bed at 7.

While they are awake during the day they want to chew on everything so I held him tiny pieces of grape, apple etc. to chew on. He loved the inside of the grapes most.

By his 10th week I started giving him soaked pellets at 6:30 and he figured out very fast that it was food because he was so hungry. I moved his formula time to 6:45 and he only ate about 10ml of it.

Hope that helps.;)

On another point pellets arent very good for electus parrots so rather replace it with something else that are recommended for this species.

You need to teach him to eat out of a bowl.;)

Wildheart: My baby is eating food if it's handed to him, and he eats up all the food from teh syringe eagerly - I don't force it at all. He's been picking at his food today from his bowl. Per my Avian vet he is on harrison's pellets - She said that there is controversy over whether pellets are sutible for an eclectus diet, but that harrisons or roudybush are acceptable food to be fed as 25-30% of the diet, noting that lower quality pellets, or ones with food coloring are not acceptable for eclectus. And that are not sutable as a majority of diet, but a minority. Therefor I feel quite comfortable feeding my eclectus the diet that my vet has planned out for him, even with inclusion of some pellets in it.

Just wanted to update everyone: Linus is doing great! He's Eating on his own, but still being fed q12. He loves his mash and cereal, but if he has to he will eat his nuts/veggies/big boy food. HE screams at his mid day feeding time, but I'm not giving in and after a few minutes he hops over to his dish and eats for himself. Almost all his feathers are in, there is just some fluff under his wings now, and he's been trying to fly for a few days now.
