I have noticed lately that Basil has some feathers that are definitely not just stress marks, but are just flat starting to wear out. These are the green feathers that cover his wings, especially towards the bottom of the wing when it is folded in. This is mostly from his masturbation on the bottom of his cage, which I have tried to stop with advice from Laurella. He also cracked a tail feather, and seems annoyed by it, because he's constantly messing with it.

He has not molted in a long time, as far as I can remember. I believe it was over a year ago when I had to move him due to a tornado that damaged the house. He has dropped a couple of contour feathers, and is always dropping a lot of his down lately. But still no major molt.

He also used to get excited and love to be in the shower (by himself), but now he doesn't even seem to enjoy that.

Any advice on how I can help promote / properly prepare him to begin a molt cycle?

He is fed a variety of fruits and veggies, nutriberries (his favorite thing in the world), uncolored pellets, and yes, unfortunately he does east some colored pellets. His breeder started him on this when he was little, and I've never been able to break him from them completely.

Otherwise, his weight, his energy level, all other aspects of his life seem perfectly normal. He has even been flying more, now that I have a big playstand for him, and his flying has gotten much better. He used to be more or less an unguided rocket, but now he actually has control and even the kids have noticed the improvement in his flying.

Look forward to hearing from any of you. Hope you and your flocks are safe.

If all other aspects of his care are adequate, you can’t really induce molting. It’ll happen when it happens, just have some patience. Maybe try feeding a little extra beans and rice (protein and calcium). Just in case these two key elements are limiting in his diet.
