Talking with the couple that rehomed JoJo I had suspicions but spending 48 hours with her I think I know why. They were first time parrot owners, cared for JoJo very well but I believe she turned into the devil and they didn’t know how to handle that. First I know the 10 hour drive was hard on her, then coming home and all the screamed welcome homes didn’t help. She is very much wanting to mate and is going from Dr.Jeykle to Mr. Hyde. She bit me twice last night while putting food in her bowl so I put her in time out “quiet room” for the night. This morning she’s better, stepped up for me but she assumed the mating position so I placed her back in her cage.

I think she scared the couple because they both reported her changing in the last few months and biting. One of them said he would put food in his mouth and she would take it and eat it. [emoji15]. Mating behavior..... got work to do with her.

An all too common case of new owners not ready or able to cope with puberty, and the bird suffers. Poor thing :( You’ve probably got another two years, if she’s 5 years old. We’ve had a n Ekkie or two enter puberty recently on this forum and we see the upfront frustrations.

What kind of diet was she on with the old owners (please don’t say zupreme...). Do you know her subspecies?

I think she’s a Solomon island, she has the blue eyeliner, but her flight and tail feathers are still encased so I’m not settled with that assessment. I mixed fresh kale (minced), corn, kiwi, and scrambled egg last night. She wouldn’t touch it. She hadn’t eaten what I gave her during the ride either so I offered seed and she went to town. This morning I gave each fid a piece of an ear of corn (all organic), she nibbled at it but left it. I’m thinking seed mixed with pellets that didn’t get eaten. They did mention giving her cheese as a treat but not often so the diet is a huge item to address. Tonight I’m going to try some squash, peas and soaked almonds. I’m hoping she will take to something that I can build off of to get her to no seed. Pellet brand Mazuri which I’m not familiar with, I don’t use pellets, or seeds other than treats.

Here is a picture of her back. Not a clear picture but her red feathers here are encased except the tips/ends. I’m hoping she will let me get her to shower to help with that.
