Hi all,

I'm sitting here just about vibrating out of my skin with excitement that no one else really understands and those that do are already tired of listening to me haha! Then I realised there is a whole forum of people who will understand!!

I have had Eclectus on the brain for over a decade and my dreams are finally coming true on Wednesday when I go pick up the most handsome dear boy!

I picked up almonds and pinenuts today for training and I'm currently tracking four packages of toys, training gear and cast iron cookware. My family think me quite boring but I am just so obsessed. I've been all over this forum reading and watching so many YouTube videos and I can't wait to share my beautiful boy with you all next week!!

I'm underwhelmed by your excitement actually... can you turn it up a few notches....I'll accept an 11 but I prefer a level 16 excitement!

Tell us about the cage and toys you got etc.

Hahaha good to know!!
I got a massive cage (husband quite displeased! Hehe), it has a perch and ladder and bowls on top. I've already added a swing and I have foraging toys on the way made of bamboo and pine. I'm waiting for him to arrive before I pick out some big pieces that I think I will rotate to make sure he has space to move and stays interested!
Oh and my Dad is making him a stand for training and just chilling out!
Will definitely post some (heaps) photos and updates!
Going to the farmers market this weekend so I can make his chop!

A huge welcome AB93....I'm sooo excited for you. I'm sure that you've read a few things here....Eclectus have difficulty perching on smooth wood; need various sizes of rough wood perches for beak and nails plus foot health; need softer chew wood than other birds (my guys shred like crazy and love balsa wood; not happy with pine - minimal interest); Ellie (destructo mouse) loves destructive toys mainly (pinatas, cardboard, rainbow palm shredders, balsa, gum and banksia nuts, pine cones, almonds in shell etc); Bertie loves foraging toy puzzles (brainy smurf)....you have the excitement of getting to know your little man's quirky personality and preferences. We are here to assist you on your beautiful relationship and journey of discovery - welcome to the WORLD of Eclectus SLAVES LOL.

Just a reminder that your new guy may not want to be a snuggle toy and could be a bit standoffish at first. So, be prepared to provide him some personal space, after all, this is as new to him, as it is to you.

I'm guessing that your guy is very young and coming from a breeder. You really want to assure that your guy is fully weened and on solid food for at least two weeks prior to bring him home. Sadly, in today's World, some breeders are pushing their chicks out prior to the baby being fully weened and problems occur. So, do not let your want override the safety of your baby.

Welcome to Parrotforum!

Thanks for the tips! I was going to ask about perches, where do you get your wood perches from? My cage just has those standard smooth ones!!

Sailboat, yes! The hard part! He is from a breeder and definitely weaned, she is very good. She contacted us on Thursday with her thoughts on whether he was ready to go this weekend or next and ultimately decided on the halfway point - Wednesday! So although disappointed I am not currently on my way to get him I can appreciate that the breeder is making decisions based on his wellbeing rather than money!!

Another good point, I have read different things about bringing him home. So he will be in the car for just over an hour and I definitely plan on putting him in his home and leaving him be. Let him just watch what we are all up to and get comfy, I did read somewhere I should leave him for 3 days before I try anything but then others said that's not necessary depends on the bird. At this point I am thinking I will follow his cues (which I have also read can be difficult!) but I do plan on permission based training so I thought as long as he doesn't look distressed or is doing the Eclectus Freeze (is that what it's called? Haha) that I might just see if he wants to come out and explore a little?

Honestly just to be able to look over and see him there will fill my heart with joy. I have been enamoured by this species since I was 7 years old!! So I will take it slow and get to know my new best friend!!

Regarding wooden perches, it may be easier for you to purchase a large and medium wooden perch from a 'bird store' to start. We initially purchased ours from our Parrot Rescue Centre store but now make our own. Before attempting to make your own wooden perch please ensure that you read up on 'safe' wood to use, how to disinfect the wood properly and purchase only stainless steel hardware (screws/washers etc) for assembly.

Happy to hear that you have a top rate Breeder!

Have you ever read: Everything is at the rate of the Parrot? If not, you will see that as a big billboard around here. So, in place of hard-wall statements; its all about moving at the rate that your Parrot is open too. Things like hiding in the corner far away from you, to being on the door begging to come out kind of statement are fairly easy to read.

Example: I'm not into three days alone when the Parrot is on the door begging to come out.

Note: Some Parrots get sick on the ride home. Some do well, up so they can see the world around them. Others do better down and others, may need to be covered. It is specific to each Parrot. Keep and open eye and be prepared to adjust as needed.

Ginger is good for 'car sickness' and other tummy upsets.

herbs
research other sites also...I always use three reputable sites as a minimum and go from there.

I never considered car sickness... I just assumed it would be best to cover him. I will definitely watch him and take along some ginger. Thank you!

My two may be rare in that they love 'going for a drive'. They love looking around as it is very stimulating. My guys practice 'flying' as the wind seems to encourage them to 'flap' about. Both fly around at home but they really get 'flapping' and excited when we go for a drive :D. Ellie travels in her harness but Bertie prefers his travel cage for the adventure. If we get in the truck, the parrots and the dog come with us LOL. They get very upset at being left behind now that we have ruined them. (We are retired so we can do this :)). I'm hoping that your little fella has a positive experience during his first car ride.

There is great reason to go for rides with one's Parrot. When the only time they are loaded into a travel carrier is for a trip to the Vet, they become use to that and will become very difficult to load into the carrier. So, rides are important to assure that when you need your Parrot to load into their carrier, take them for a ride, especially if they enjoy it!

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
For my bird, when we are in the car, I have found that she does better uncovered, but that looking out the windows at eye-level riles her up (in a good or bad way, but seems more bad than good). Consequently, she is much calmer/happier if I tape paper towels over the windows in cars with higher seats (just the ones on her left and right side)-- It is a non-issue for mine in cars with lower seats (where she can just see the sky and overpasses) but in vans etc (where seats are higher up) the scenery whizzing by makes her flap and that's bad news in her travel cage, as it is fairly small, but the largest I could find...I don't think she likes it--- even if she does though, letting her flap is not a possibility, given her wingspan and the travel cage...too hard to drive and worry about broken blood feathers in the backseat lol.

I do not put her on the floor, as the temperature on the floor is MUCH harder to regulate, and because parrots prefer to be higher up (rather than lower). I only mention this because my family always acts like I'm a weirdo for taping windows before trips, rather than just putting her on the ground.

On the flip side of all of this, some birds actually PREFER to look outside, so it just depends.

Only one if my parrots my GCC Ta-dah get car sick. Nothing helps her. She shakes her head and vomits...its an hour or more to the vet, she vomits about twice on the way, and on the way back. Once home is fine.

Remember even fully weaned and raised by excellent breeders, can revert to need a hand-feeding supplement feed a day, from stress if new home. Do get a digital kitchen scale abd weigh when you get him home, before yiu out him in his cage fir the first time. Then yiu have your starting point.

If he is very use to handling, he may want yiu to comfort him day one. So follow his lead as you planned.

I always supplement warmth, when bring home a new bird. I have a sweeter heater from Amazon, the smallest one, and I still hsve to set back from cage 6 inches usually. You do not have to have this, but its very valuable fir if your home is drafty, or you have a sick bird.

This is a great all around article. Pamela Clark has many excellent behavior and other articles
