Hi all,
I'm sitting here just about vibrating out of my skin with excitement that no one else really understands and those that do are already tired of listening to me haha! Then I realised there is a whole forum of people who will understand!! I have had Eclectus on the brain for over a decade and my dreams are finally coming true on Wednesday when I go pick up the most handsome dear boy! I picked up almonds and pinenuts today for training and I'm currently tracking four packages of toys, training gear and cast iron cookware. My family think me quite boring but I am just so obsessed. I've been all over this forum reading and watching so many YouTube videos and I can't wait to share my beautiful boy with you all next week!! |

Re: Everyone else tired of my excitement!
Hahaha good to know!!
I got a massive cage (husband quite displeased! Hehe), it has a perch and ladder and bowls on top. I've already added a swing and I have foraging toys on the way made of bamboo and pine. I'm waiting for him to arrive before I pick out some big pieces that I think I will rotate to make sure he has space to move and stays interested! Oh and my Dad is making him a stand for training and just chilling out! Will definitely post some (heaps) photos and updates! Going to the farmers market this weekend so I can make his chop! |

Re: Everyone else tired of my excitement!
A huge welcome AB93....I'm sooo excited for you. I'm sure that you've read a few things here....Eclectus have difficulty perching on smooth wood; need various sizes of rough wood perches for beak and nails plus foot health; need softer chew wood than other birds (my guys shred like crazy and love balsa wood; not happy with pine - minimal interest); Ellie (destructo mouse) loves destructive toys mainly (pinatas, cardboard, rainbow palm shredders, balsa, gum and banksia nuts, pine cones, almonds in shell etc); Bertie loves foraging toy puzzles (brainy smurf)....you have the excitement of getting to know your little man's quirky personality and preferences. We are here to assist you on your beautiful relationship and journey of discovery - welcome to the WORLD of Eclectus SLAVES LOL.

Re: Everyone else tired of my excitement!
Just a reminder that your new guy may not want to be a snuggle toy and could be a bit standoffish at first. So, be prepared to provide him some personal space, after all, this is as new to him, as it is to you.
I'm guessing that your guy is very young and coming from a breeder. You really want to assure that your guy is fully weened and on solid food for at least two weeks prior to bring him home. Sadly, in today's World, some breeders are pushing their chicks out prior to the baby being fully weened and problems occur. So, do not let your want override the safety of your baby. Welcome to Parrotforum!

Re: Everyone else tired of my excitement!
Thanks for the tips! I was going to ask about perches, where do you get your wood perches from? My cage just has those standard smooth ones!!
Sailboat, yes! The hard part! He is from a breeder and definitely weaned, she is very good. She contacted us on Thursday with her thoughts on whether he was ready to go this weekend or next and ultimately decided on the halfway point - Wednesday! So although disappointed I am not currently on my way to get him I can appreciate that the breeder is making decisions based on his wellbeing rather than money!! Another good point, I have read different things about bringing him home. So he will be in the car for just over an hour and I definitely plan on putting him in his home and leaving him be. Let him just watch what we are all up to and get comfy, I did read somewhere I should leave him for 3 days before I try anything but then others said that's not necessary depends on the bird. At this point I am thinking I will follow his cues (which I have also read can be difficult!) but I do plan on permission based training so I thought as long as he doesn't look distressed or is doing the Eclectus Freeze (is that what it's called? Haha) that I might just see if he wants to come out and explore a little? Honestly just to be able to look over and see him there will fill my heart with joy. I have been enamoured by this species since I was 7 years old!! So I will take it slow and get to know my new best friend!! |
