Hello,:)
Someone recommended that this website might be a good place to locate a parrot? I fostered a eclectus parrot for a year and had to give her back. I was so sad after she was gone :( Wondering any good places to adopt an eclectus? Im not looking to shop, Would prefer to adopt. I hear a lot of bad rap from females but I absolutely adored my little foster girl. She wasn't necessary super cuddly but she did sit down on my chest everynight and watch movies with me, and tolerated pets.
Any one who has had female and male. How are they different also? Im in the Bay area.

Good morning!

Where in this wide world are you located? That would make a big difference in your search.

Hi and welcome! Tolerating other pets is a good thing, until said pet decides to eat birdie!

Absolutely not a statement of, ‘Are you nuts?’ But one of, ‘Always be aware, heading off the worst!’

Take great care as it can be said that you had been very lucky with your Eclectus hen. Cuddling and petting is not always a Parrot thing. Snuggle pillows is more a cat thing than a Parrot thing. Yes, as seen with your hen, 'some will allow it,' but!

As you are searching for a new member to your home, consider being open to a "Parrot' that wants to be with you. Or, better stated, one that chooses you! They are much better at the selection process than Humans are!

As Boats said above, petting and cuddling isn't always a parrot thing, and generally less so with Ekkies. If they allow petting at all, front to back only. Their feathers are more hair-like, and they generally HATE it if you mess with "the doo." My guy Tucker is about as cuddly as they come for an Ekkie, but his version of it is more about being in my face. Literally, beak on my face, cheek, nose, ear, whatever. He lives for the physical contact, but pretty much always facing me so he can read me.

Now, the girls are decidedly different from the boys. It in their DNA. I don't see one being better or worse than the other, just different. The girls tend to have more of a diva attitude, where as the boys are more about servicing the ladies... Any lady that will have them. Lol! Again, DNA. It's what they do in the wild. Also, with those things in mind, the girls do have a reputation for being more cage protective.

Thank you by the way, for considering a rescue. I'm a huge believer in second chances for the best life they can have. They deserve it, and they're so worth it. An adult bird is generally past all the baby stuff, puberty, and has a more established personality. They're really better at choosing us than we are of them. All of my birds have been rescues or rehomes. Zero regrets!

Welcome to the Forum. My two are adopted so I wholeheartedly agree with your approach. Our Ellie naps on hubby's chest whilst she hangs out. She is our Snuggle-Bug. She likes to feel the strings whilst hubby plays the guitar. She loves to sit on my shoulder as we go for walks (safety harnessed) outside. Absolutely my precious lovable gal UNLESS you try to put your hands in her house (cage) LOL:D. Our Bertie is totally amazing as well. He loves to hang around and help me with the dishes and dinner. He's just like Saxguy's Tucker, in your face eye-to-eye kinda guy. He loves sampling all of the veggies as I prep. Such are the Eclectus - aka 'couch potatoes':). Eat, sleep, hang out....forced into exercising by Mum (as Bertie calls me) or Mommy (as Ellie calls me) - they chose my name from somewhere during our conversations.:)

Look for local rescue centers etc. We drove a day out, over-nighted in a motel, and a day back to bring Bertie home. The whole purpose was to get Ellie in bed with routine before dark when getting Bertie; and getting them both home and in bed with routine before dark when Bertie came home. What's your limit for driving? Choose that as your radius and search. Stay with us as we would love to hear the outcome. :).

As well stated above, cuddling isn't generally a good thing for parrots. Ekkies especially aren't big fans of it.

When done right and properly cared for, parrots are just one of those wild animals you sort of HAVE to...hold at a distance even when you THINK you don't have to, for a whole host of reasons. We'll allow for some exceptions based on bird individualities and eventualities (looking at you, Scott :) ), but generally don't turn to parrots for cuddly.. If its specifically cuddly you want, get a dog.

Since you are keen to adopt, there are a number of parrot rescues in southern CA you can obtain your future friend from. A quick google search will pop them right up. Give one of them a call.

Not an Ekkie owner, but I can tell you my small Amazon Salty is NOT a cuddler/snuggler. Likes his scratches ( when he wants them) but thats about it. You want cuddly? Get a conure! They seem to thrive on it.

Congrats on the new feathered friend!

They do get a bad wrap; they aren’t called fiery redheads for nothing!

They can just be opinionated. Males are dunderheaded pushovers, the slaves. Females rule the roost.

But MANY problems come down to hormonal control; females can become hormonal on a dime, and you’ll know it when she starts chasing after dark places like under or behind the couch, a closet, etc. learn about controlling hormones, being loved by an Ekkie, you’ll quickly become an expert, if you’re caring for her properly. Don’t pet her anywhere other than the head, get to know the Ekkie diet including how to keep sugars down (hint: fruits are a HUGE contributor of sugar, a hidden source no less), don’t give access to a sleeping hut or other dark location, etc.

Pics and details! How old/history, etc?
