Baby Vos with red tail?

Hi all! First post here... I used to have a beautiful Vos boy who was the love of my life. Unfortunately, I lost him to PDD and it’s taken me years to even consider getting another eclectus. Lately, I have been thinking about getting another Vos. Clearly I’m biased, but I love their look, size, and everything. Totally a fan

they are, however, pretty hard to come by...

I’ve been in touch with a Vos breeder saying he currently has 1 baby male (6-7 weeks old). He sent me a pic (attached) and said that this is his first baby boy who has a bit of red tail feathers. Now, I don’t know if this is accurate, but I read that while Aru and red sided young males can sometimes show red color in their tails, this is supposedly NEVER the case for Vos boys? This site also states that Vos males have less yellow in their tails, but I thought it was the other way around?

Hello, and welcome! Thanks for joining. So sorry about your feathered friend. Many of us have been there, so we understand.

What an adorable baby boy! I've never seen the red tail tips before, but that's just my limited exposure, and no experience with a Vos, or babies. Gorgeous though! My first Ekkie was a Grand, severe lifelong plucker before I got him, so I never saw a tail feather. He pulled every one as soon as it would start to grow. My current boy is a Red Sided, and it's almost funny to me still, to see an Ekkie with his full tail. His tips are yellow/white-ish He's kind of rough on them, very active boy. I find that funny too, since Ekkies have such a reputation of being perch potatoes. Nope, not mine! Busy all the time

Unfortunately while we around here have ample experience in eclectus care, subspecies identification is not a particularly common skill, least of all with the boys, and EVEN least of all with subspecies chick feather color development.

This would be a great question for an established eclectus breeder. I’d strongly recommend reaching out to laurella desborough, who would be able to answer your question with ease. Just google her name and her website will show up immediately. She also frequents the Eclectus Parrot Facebook group also.

Thank you everyone for your responses!! Unfortunately, I thought I would get email notifications, so I missed the replies... but I appreciate them.

Update: I decided against this little nugget, sadly... mainly because I didn’t like the way the breeder was handling raising the baby (only feeding, no other interaction, then snapped at me that it’s my job to tame the baby when I simply asked if they also socialize him so he gets used to human interaction. She said they don’t have time to carry him around all day - and that was in response to me just asking if he is used to being touched by humans). So, that was a turn off.

So, the search continues... thanks again, everyone!
