Hello everyone,

I recently adopted a female Electus semi tame about a year old. Her previous owner was feeding her a diet of safflower seeds and peanuts. I?m in the process of converting her to a better diet. My plan was to convert her to chop for breakfast made up of veggies, fruit, grains, and legumes. Then organic pellets for dinner.

However someone recently told me the Electus diet should be compromised of 80% fruit.

What do you think is best?

Thanks
Stacey with Sophia

Electus diets are highly specialized and require the active involvement of the Human to assure that they are providing their Electus a truly excellent diet.

Within the Electus sub-forum you will find threads dedicated the proper diet.

Remember that an Avian Medical Professional is a great source for the health of your Electus as a full spectrum blood test can provide specific information that can guide to specific selections.

As above, I have also stayed at Holiday Inns and as well, am not and expert the the unique diet needs of Electus. That said, I have never hear our site Electus experts speak to a diet 80% made-up of fruit.

Vast knowledge is available in the Electus sub-forum.

Hello Sophia,

What kind of pellets are you giving exactly? Eclectus do have special dietary requirements that must be adhered to, so one must be incredibly careful dealing with pellets. Ekkies do best when on a diet of fresh vegetables and grains - 80% fruit will get you into a lot of trouble with hormones.

Research as much as you can, especially since you have a female. Hormones is a HUGE issue with eclectus since they are capable of breeding at any point in the year (unlike most other parrots), so they are inducible to hormonal behavior, not just reliant on spring to come around. An improper diet will trigger a hormonal monster..

One of the main keys is to reduce sugar intake. This includes sugars contained in fruit. You've seen "fresh fruit and vegetable diets"? Thats not correct, it is "fresh veg and grain diets, with the occasional fruit as a snack". This will becoem all the more important once she hits puberty - hold on to your hat when that comes around, you'll need every hormonal control method in the book.

My 6 month old does well on fresh fruits and vegetables. I offer more veggies than fruits but she loves her apples and grapes. I still only offer a couple small pieces each feeding. I do also offer pellets and seeds to her once per day or sometimes I will sprkinkle a few pellets and small amount of seed into her veggies. I know pellets are a touchy subject with eclectus parrots, but I feed them in moderation and she seems to be doing fine. I use roudybush natural for her and my african grey.
