Middle of the night play time...

Skyler, since I have had him, has woken up in the middle of the night almost every night and just starts playing around in his cage. He does this around four o'clock most nights like it was his original routine. I would just take the toys out and be done with it but he's not playing with the toys. He gets up to walk around the cage from top to bottom and do it all over again numerous times. Its almost like he's exercising. When he is finally done walking around his cage he will sit there and ruffle his feather for a good fifteen minutes, preening and ruffling. I wake up and turn the lights on and he stops and stairs at me. The moment the lights are off I hear him start right back up again. How can I get him to sleep through out the night? For barely being able to get around his cage when I first got him, he sure does an excellent job at it now!!! hehe.

with vincent i have set times for going to be and for him getting up. i find that covering his cage works a treat. bed times at 8pm then bout 9 i cover cage all lights out he sleeps till im hime from work in the mornings he would sleep to i take cover off his cage lol but from i started covering the cage hes been great

lol, I guess I should have mentioned that. His bed time is roughly 8-830 depending on how the night goes. And he has me up no later than eight in the morning. Knowing my school schedule I guess, he has become a great alarm clock. lol. But he still wakes up in the middle of the night. I don't cover his cage because I found he just sits there and growls at the cover. He's not a huge fan.

Sometimes a nice warm snack just before bedtime can work such as Oatmeal.

Maybe try putting him to bed at around 9 and see if he wakes up any later.

I think it has a lot to do with him sleeping in your room. It's possible you are disturbing him with your own movements through the night. Eclectus don't sleep like we do, their wild instincts tells them it's safer to sleep with 1 eye & 1 ear alert just in case there is nasty predators around.

All my baby weaned birds are kept in a large room downstairs. Once they settle for the night i very rarely hear them. So if at all possible so you both can get a good night sleep, is there some where else you can put Skyler for the night. Even get him used to being covered at night, all my birds are covered at night i think they feel that little bit more secure. Don't worry about the growling most eclectus do that anyway.

I will definitely try the warm snack, and I will also put him to sleep at a later time to see if that works.

As far as him going in to another room... I kinda live in a studio apartment... kinda... Its my parents basement and I am renting it out from them. My brother has the one bedroom down here he is renting out. I will cover him though now that I know that most Ekkies growl anyways; I will see how long it takes for him to get used to it.

When Mishka was afraid of being covered at night in his night cage in my bedroom I did the following.
I switched the lights off, got into bed, and made although I was going to sleep, and lay there. I did not cover his cage. When he fell asleep, I quietly walked out. He sometimes slept the night through. Eventually, about a week later, when I put him in his night cage, I covered it, switched off the night, and sat on the bed talking and singing to him. Walking out a short while later. After three nights he was okay with his cage being covered. Incidentally every night when being taken to the bedroom, Mishka does back push-up in order to delay going to sleep. Once inside the cage and the cover is on he growls for a few minutes LoL I love it

Our female sleeps in the loungeroom and she was doing that everynight, i would always go and check on her, i got sick of it so i just ignored her for a few nights and she stopped doing it.. i'm sure she thought it was a game

I guess I just don't notice mine doing that since they're upstairs right now under quarantine plus that tank is still in their spot downstairs....IF Gracie knows we're up and about, she wants out NOW! She likes to sit on my shoulders while I'm on the computer. She behaves for me very very good! She likes to huddle close to me. They're very curious birds, but VERY watchful eyes, they will peek out at you from behind but when they catch you watching. They stop and just sit there. So far we're BIG fans of them!!!! We don't understand why we never got one years ago....lol
