Hi everyone
I came across this forum today, so glad this is here for the bird community, love it!
I have 3 older birds (B&G, Greenwing, M2) and two 3 month old Harlequins, Coyote and Zoey.
From the get go I held them, talked to them, kissed them, and have touched their feet, beaks, head, laid them on their backs, touched their wings, and filed their nails. My teens hold them, and we have let the neighbors socilaize with them too.
We started having flying issues with Coyote, so I did a minimal wing trim. They wouldnt stay in their nursery box so we put them in a smaller cage, with low perches, but very quickly they mastered perching, hanging upside down, and speed climbing. The know the word "UP" and go onto our hands with no problems, and we are working on "DOWN" too.
the don't like formula much anymore, they spit it out and run away from us, so we give them bananas, mashed mango, peach, pear, weaning pellets, oatmeal, and this is going well. they seem to eat now when they want, and prefer in their cage over eating on the floor with our help.
I bought them a double cage, and they love it. their jungle gym as we call it.
We have moved them into the kitchen, with the other birds, where before, they were in the den around the corner (heatlamp set-up, etc)
Coyote has been going after my B&G for a week now. He flies off his manzanita tree, the couch, or runs on the floor to her cage, climbs up and begins to beak her and show dominance. He has tried this with the Greenwing as well.
I am wondering if cage location is the issue, but even on the stand he goes after them.
So I am thinking of doing a full wing trim (we did just a little snipping so he could fly from floor to couch, etc) but that still doesnt keep the other birds safe.
Zoey is kinda like this with the dogs, but she is getting better.
What do I do?

Hello,

I rehomed a 12 y/o B&G (the guy thought she was about 12 but didn't know for sure) about a week ago. I was originally looking to upgrade my U2's cade, but saw Lucky for sale. Her past is not know to me. The person I bought her from was keeping her in his garage and he was afraid to interact with her. He said he was selling her for a friend.

Anyway, I felt bad for the bird. She was scared, but not aggressive. She allowed me to pet her and she stepped up on my arm, but she wasn't affectionate like my U2. She will bluster sometimes to see if I'm afraid of her beak (which I am but I don't let on), but she hasn't bitten. Just grabbed my finger with her beak a few times. I've been taking it slow with her and she is now fairly friendly and allows me to scratch her neck and put her in on the shower perch (which she loves).

That's with me...

With my wife and kids, she is less friendly. She hasn't bitten, but she has nipped at my wife and son, although they can feed her if I'm out of the room. I have a feeling she is sensing their fear and this is causing fear and stress in her. Neither of them (wife/son) have worked up enough courage to ask her to step up or pet her. In the interest of avoiding a painful bite, I told them this was wise and that we should give her a few weeks to adjust.

So, my question: is there a better way to get the bird used to my family?

Finally, other than her interaction with the family, she is an easy macaw to be around. No screaming. No plucking or overpreening. She has a 7 word vocabulary that I've heard so far. She was throwing her food and water dishes out, but I just replaced them with fixed bowls...no more issue there!

If anyone has any pointers, I'd be happy to read them!

Several years ago pictures surfaced of several albino-like macaw chicks that appeared in a clutch of B&Gs. AFA magazine ran a story on them and they were rumored to be in Austin Texas. I never heard any more about them; if rebreeding the same pair produced any more, if the birds were fertile and produced themselves or what? The pictures below show the almost pre-historic monster like chicks that grew into beautiful specimens that are somewhat yellow looking from the blood inside the feathers. Surely you could retire on what they were worth. Does anyone know any more what happened to them? Double-click on the pictures to enlarge them.

Hey guys ! Hope all is well :) Before I start, I would like to say thanks to everyone who help me out with my new B&G especially being a newbie. So regarding the problem. I usually let him out for about 2-3 hours. When I let him out, he goes straight to the top and hangs out. He lets me scratch his beak, rub his belly and neck, and clean his feathers, no "Stepping Up" or other activities. I haven't bought a Play Stand, I'm looking around. So when I'm ready to put him back into the cage, he either climbs to the back of the cage where I can't reach him or when I try to grab him from underneath, he locks onto the cage. The first night, I tricked him with the syringe, because he thought I was feeding him, second night, it didn't work and I tried a small perch, he grabbed on, and put him in the cage. The third night, the perch didn't work, so I called Marc from Parrots of the World in LI,NY and he said to cover him in a towel and that didn't work, because he still managed to get away from me. Last night I tried for an hour, and I needed help from my brother, we tricked him with the towel, syringe and perch all together and it barely work. So I'm not sure what to do tonight ? He sure is being a pain in the butt :D
Any ideas guys -? Thanks !
