Keats and I had our first health scare over the Memorial Day weekend. He got his foot caught in one of his toys (that toy went away very quickly!). Luckily, he's okay :)

He had a checkup by his vet on Thursday, and there was no evidence of bruising or cuts, and definitely no broken bones. He was very lucky! When the accident happened, he was caught hanging upside down from his toy and then crashed to the bottom of his cage. Birds can easily break a leg this way, and they can also break their necks if they land badly. He seems to be avoiding that side of his cage now, but I'm thankful that he wasn't injured. I hung a new, safer mirror toy for him last night too.

I learned from the vet that, if he had broken his leg, most likely the only treatment for small birds like budgies, canaries, etc. is amputation. I'm so thankful that he still has two legs to stand on :)

Yes, I can describe it - though it has now been dismantled. Good idea!

It was a small double-sided 'mirror' with leather strips threaded thru 'S' link above and below the mirror. Not exactly like this: Heaven Heart
...but similar. It had the bell on the bottom also. It's the S link that he got his foot stuck in - he's a budgie, very small foot!

I don't know that the toy is always problem for small birds. I have noticed that Keats has become a little more aggressive with his toys, putting his foot on them to hold them while he chews. I think that was the problem here, as we've had the toy for a few months, and he had no trouble with until a week ago, when the foot got caught.

Thank you :) I am too! I have since taken his toy apart and salvaged the leather strips, which he loves to nibble. They now live in his tent, so he can chew on them safely.
