Mealy Amazon with Vitamin A Deficiency

I recently rescued a 20 year old Mealy Amazon named Laylee and was told she had a vitamin a deficiency. Her syptoms are loss of energy foul smelling breath and yellow colored flacky feet. I was also told she was seen by a vet and he sad to give her nekto-s.. I dont like using powdered vitamin or anything that you can over used for that matter. What would be a good diet on the day to day basis to clear up these syptoms and can my Laylee (my Mealy Amazon) be cured or is vitamin a deficiency a permanant thing.

You should really take the bird to your Avian Vet or Vet, I wouldn't mess around if the bird is showing symptoms of Vit A Deficiency. You really need bloods to check on how deficient it is & if there is some other problems as well. If it has a fowl smelling breath that can mean infection & even abcesses in the mouth.

There is no harm in giving birds a boost with multi-vitamins & if the Vet recommended it, the advice should be listened to.

For what it's worth you can't over dose on multi-vitamins. A parrot will only drink the required amount of water it needs. And if it has a good daily supply of fruit & veg will need very little water.

Thanks for the advice I am looking into avain vets in my neighborhood but just wanted to here what every one had to say about it. I never owned any large parrots before I always had lovebird and many species of medium sized parrots and I dont no how much food she should be consuming on a daily basis and about the sprouts I am looking into them..

Sweet potato is supposed to be high in vitamin A. Puck looooves his sweet potato anything! I forget what else is, but you can always google "vitamin A rich foods" and see what comes up.

I'd also get the bird to the vet ASAP! If it's extremely low in vitamin A, a supplement would be a good idea (preferably food based) to get the levels up to normal, then perhaps a diet with extra vitamin A afterwards.

Also, I think it'd be interesting to take a before and after picture! I've heard that it's supposed to help the brightness of the feathers, so I'd like to see photographic results!

You should be doing more than looking into an avian vet, you should already be taking this bird to the vet.

Birds need Vit D3 in order for their digestive tract to absorb calcium. If a bird is deficient in Vit A it's because their diet is low in Vit A & calcium.

With the symptoms this bird has it's already in poor condition & changing it's diet isn't going to give a quick fix it needs Avian Vet help for that. From my own experience with my friends bird it will need Vit A injections, possibly antibiotics & a complete over haul of it's diet. My friends bird is still recovering after 1 year but he was close to death. He was one very sick birdie.

If I came acrost irresponsible I apologize but I just recived Laylee the day before I posted and when I said I was looking into avian vets in my neighbor hood I did not mean I wasn't gonna wait to take her to the vet... Winslow animal hospitol is the closest to me I have a apointment tommarrow I do not no if they have a tremendous amout of experence with large parrots and I want to look into a good avian vet in my neighborhood but in the mean time she will be going to the winslow animal hospitol.. Sorry if I did not explain my intentions in full...

Thanks for explaining. I pray your bird can be brought back to good health. I suggest a cook book that goes into education as well as recipes sold by the Phoenix Landing rescue for birds. I have worn mine threadbare.

Generally speaking your bird need orange colored foods,sweet potatoes,carrots and direct sunlight, not though the window, outside sunshine, and yes the vet.
