Hello all,
My lovely little jenday conure kazoo has developed a problem with one of his legs, he cannot use his foot, it appears to be paralysed and he stands on his elbow, the toes on this foot are twisted and his claws grow crooked on this foot. His other foot seems fine.

Obviously this causes him some problems when perching but I have made modifications to his cage to make things easier for him. He doesn't seem to be in any pain, there is no swelling, just a bit of a callous on his elbow from using it to stand on, he seems happy and well and has adapted well to losing the use of his foot.

I wonder if anyone has experienced something similar, if anyone knows how this might have happened, and most of all if anyone knows of anything I can do to improve the situation?

I have photographs if anyone wishes to see but can't figure out how to upload them

Thanks
Rhian

Have you had this bird to an avian vet?? I am sure the vet will guide you in what needs to be done for the cage. I am so sorry this has happened to Kzoo. You will find instructions on uploading photos in the technical forum.

Hello spirtbird,

I haven't been to an avian vet,

I live rurally and all the vets are agricultural, my experience with the local vet isn't too good, I took him there some time ago for advice on his feather picking and was charged a lot for very little, the nearest avian vet would be at least 100 miles away. I thought i might find more knowledgeable people here.

Kazoo is 8 years old now, his leg ring is loose so I don't think that his problems are due to his ring

AWw poor baby. It looks like the ring should come off. It may be loose due to muscle atrophy and the bird could catch it on something an get another injury. There are good people on the forum but most of them would tell you to take him to a vet. In this case it may be worth a 2 to 3 hr. drive. It looks like some sort of injury, not splayed legs. It may require surgery to re set the leg so the bird can perch. Of course others may chime in here and give their opinions.

He needs to make the trip to an avian vet. Some months ago my Nanday began experiencing weakness in her feet. We never were certain of the culprit. It could have been an infection, a selenium deficiency, or even metal poisoning. I had discovered my frozen vegetables contained lead when I put them in the microwave and they began sparking! The FDA says it's safe, ha, ha. Safe for me (maybe), but perhaps not a 5.5 oz bird! I didn't want to eat them either after discovering this.

Anyway, she was fine but he says that's because I caught it so fast. I urge you to take the bird in just in case his other foot becomes affected as well.

That's very good to hear. It is possible this leg can still be fixed, or made better. And you definitely want to save the other leg.

Please let us know what you find out. Is this something that developed pretty quickly or over a period of time? And how long has it been like this. I was also wondering, was he plucked when you got him or is that also something new? Sorry for all the questions, just curious.

Thank you so much Kaz for going out of your way to help this little guy or gal. I pray that the leg can be easily repaired. Since it is such a long ride for you and the bird you may want to consider a full exam. We will be wait to hear from you. Merry Christmas.
