Yes, I am a smoker (don't hang me!!!!) ... but I want to pass along some valuable info for anyone caring for birds ...

ALWAYS, (that's with a capital "A"), wash your hands before touching any of your birdies after snuffing out that ciggy butt. Birds' plummages quickly absorb nicotine off of your fingers and hands and it can cause an array of veterinary problems (plucking being one of them).

This was brought to mind as I was training my pet sitter ... and I thought it might be important to pass along (probably the obvious) to you.

Since I smoke and have 2 other species of animals in my home (3 including humanoids), I am CONSTANTLY washing my hands. Giardia can pass between species ... amonst other things. I wash after smoking and between species.

Perhaps a good incentive to do the dreaded - quit smoking. :54:

 I knew I would open myself up to that ... but it was worth it :p ;)

MY father died of lung cancer 2 years ago at the age of 56...it is a horrendous death to go through and to watch...please don't do that to yourself and your loved ones...Sorry, I know that's not the point of this thread, but smoking really hits home with me. :(

I have to join the rest here and reccomend trying to quit. My grandmother died of lung cancer before I was born, so this kinda hits home for me as well. :(

What is that supposed to mean?

Your statement was just kind of a "buzz kill" -- it was only meant to get you going ... I can't agree with your statement any more than anyone else ... I would also get on my soapbox about any females who are planning on getting preggers should stop ... the information about how smoking/tobacco/nicotine effects fetal development is astounding and, really, scary!

This thread has certainly taken a turn south. What does Prego have to do with anything I've said? I'm not making speghetti (nor a social statement) ... I'm just saying to wash ones hands after smoking!

And, Tex, smoking is not a gender-issue.

We're a family here and we want the best for you and your FIDS. I think Tex was just trying to lighten the mood and suggest some more random negatives of smoking. Nobody here is trying to condemm you or make you feel bad we would all feel horrible if you left. Have you ever tried quitting? You would have a great support group in us :) We just want what's best for you Please don't get mad.

Wow. Someone is peeved and it has nothing to do with me for a change.
Yay for me.
I recently did some giving up and I was not good to be around.
The end result better be worth it.
I have noticed some people are sick of being told we should quit.
It can get a bit much after a while.
I was sick of hearing it.

Sweet (((Kelli))), I’m not leaving … but I did have to log off last evening because this old broad needs her beauty rest :31: (unlike you youngsters—including sprite Tex—who can stay up to the wee hours of the morning and look perky and refreshed! :p). Also, kiddo, there is nothing wrong in voicing one’s thoughts/feelings about something they feel strongly about as long as it is done with respect and no personal attack. I didn’t feel I did anything but voice my frustration and call it a night. Nothing wrong in that. :headwall:

Yes, Red, you got it. It is tiresome, bothersome and intrusive … hope you are finding the rewards to be more than you expected! No small feat, that’s for sure. :worship2: Congratulations to you and your steadfast efforts. :jumping40

And, good girl Peta! Wash, wash, scrub, scrub … I do the same oft times until my hands crack … but better safe than sorry! ;)

I will be more cognizant of the implications of my posts from here on out … try to head potential problems off at the pass and leave silent, things that should remain so.

For those who have lost loved ones due to any circumstance, I extend my heart to you. Dan lost his mother to breast cancer when he was around 20 years old—it was a life changing experience and great loss for him, to this day. :smile019:

:D :D :D I've just seen this

Yeah saying people should give up is a lot easier than actually giving up.

Congrats to ya on managing to give up.
