Popsicle the Senegal Parrot &
Pepsi the Mealy Amazon
Great article and website.

Many of the points they listed as signs of malnutrition in birds, Pepsi has. Were now getting healthier on our pelleted diet and fruits and veggies everyday.

That's an excellent article!

I've never had too much luck with pelleted diets (my parakeet Fritzy, RIP, would spit them at you). I like Harrison's for the nutrition, but the color is just unappetizing.

I'm lucky though, in that Keupi will eat just about anything put in front of him. After his zinc poisoning last year, I'm hesitant to make any 'pet' food his normal diet. Working with my vet, he's on about a 40/60 parrot/people diet.

His people food that he gets are things like cheerios and oat/whole grain cereals, Gerber Graduates (dehydrated fruit, snacks, and cereal), fresh vegetables galore, etc.

I also keep, in my fridge (replacing every 6 months), Harrison's baby bird formula. When he was undiagnosed last year and not eating at all, this literally kept him alive and once diagnosed, was a supplement to his treatment. That and a bottle of Gatorade are always on hand for emergencies, as well as milk thistle.

Pellets aren't great for budgies. Cockatiels, Lovevbirds, P'lets and up, Yes.

True. Also, I didn't add a special caveat that I should have (my apologies) - Keupi is a bit different regarding his nutritional needs and diet, as due to his poisoning we do know he will always have issues with his liver, pancreas and kidneys (which were damaged - but the full extent of damage is still uncertain).

I guess with nutrition I have a different outlook now. I also realize I don't have a choice. Once again, I'm very lucky I have a good 'try'-er. At the same time, I'm also not an advocate of a heavily pelleted diet (though that did not have any affect on his poisoning). However regarding nutrition, I am against a heavily pelleted diet while at the same time realize my fid has a different set of needs.
