Regarding the witch hazel... I think it is important to mention that you can get alcohol-free witch hazel at health food stores. It's less drying on the skin, therefore better at dealing with skin irritations. Regular drug stores don't generally carry it.
I have this book, and I love it: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Holistic-Care-Birds-David-McCluggage/dp/0876055668/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333526685&sr=8-1]Amazon.com: Holistic Care for Birds (0021898055668): David McCluggage, Pamela Leis Higdon, Pamela Leis higdon: Books[/ame]
It has a lot of general care about birds, and a lot of natural remedies that can be safely used with birds. The impression I got from it was, with a few exceptions maybe, if you would treat a baby human with it, you can treat a bird with it.
