I have been looking for a bird for our family. I have been looking at the Alexandrine Parakeet and it seems that one may fit well into our family. I came across one on Craigslist. Ugh....

The guy has had the bird a month and decided he wasn't a parrot person, but the bird looks well taken care of and has a big cage. (Macaw sized)

But he says that the bird doesn't have use of one of its wings due to a dog attack when with the previous owner. He says the bird cannot fly and falls hard.

*** You can see in the pics that it is defiantely his right wing that he has no use of, it seems to just hang there ***

My questions are:

Is this something that ever may be fixed?

Would it likely be causing him pain?

What precautions would have to be taken in his general every day care?

I have to ask these NOW, because I know my heart will win WHEN I go see him and I will get him anyways. So I might as well know what I will be getting myself into.......

A broken wing will not improve over time if it has healed that way. Some pain may be associated with it, but it may not bother it at all. obviously some precautions must be made that the bird has security outside its cage as its usual defense (flight) is no longer possible. Ensuring that the bird is not startled will help to prevent any sudden drops to the floor that could cause injury. I presume that the parrot is healthy otherwise which means that other than caution and possible scar tissue or bone growth issues the bird can have a normal happy earthbound life. A vet can give you insight into the extent of damage and if anything is to be cautioned against healthwise.
PS, he is beautiful

OMG... he's gorgeous!

If it could be fixed, it would probably be very expensive, requiring extensive surgery... An avian vet would be able to advise you.

He looks happy and in good feather, so he might not be too stressed out about his wing...

Do you know if he is tame, and whether he was hand raised?

Awwww...he's beautiful!

As far as his broken wing...our Conure, Franklin also has a broken/deformed wing. We got him as a baby and because he was such an active baby, I didn't notice it until months later when he was relaxed looking straight at us...I thought...odd..."look at his one wing? I just realized it never goes flush at the shoulder like his other side does....hmmm...I wonder if it's broken or if he was hatched that way...."

It's never bothered him that we know of and we do A LOT with Franklin...he's very active, acrobatic, complete clown and finally at almost at a year old he's had a few flight spurts. I notice that he can't fly very far or get very good lift, but he can fly across the bedroom, like from his cage to me and land with no problem.

His wing doesn't ever hang funny or droop down...but it always "sticks out" at the shoulder.

It adds to his character and doesn't seem to bother him ever...so I don't worry none about it.

The alexandrine in the picture looks healthy and happy and perhaps he's not bothered at all by his wing. I guess you won't know until you meet him in person.

If it were me...I wouldn't hesitate to take him because of his wing especially if it doesn't seem to cause him any problem. I think if it causes him pain when he moves it....you'll know, he'll scream, and bite at it. And if he's tame enough to be petted, he might not want you trying to touch him on or around his wing.

If it's a fairly fresh break, you might be able to take him to an avian vet and have it set and wrapped to heal correctly...if it's an old already healed break that he's learned to live with, it might be best just to leave it.

Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

Toni

IF the wings is already healed up, it's not going to change. You'll just have a bird that's not able to fly, they can still be fine without being able to fly. It just makes him a special bird and if it were up to me, I'll leave it alone. I've had a bird once with broken wing and he was one happy bird. Someone else have posted this link before and I absolutely love this story. A Tale of Two Cockies

That's an awfully small cage for a cockatoo...

Thank you so much for the input and reassurrance. We are going to go see him this weekend. The man that owns him says he was told he is about 6 years old and he is very easily handled. So we will see how it goes when we see him. Hopefully he picks us!

Did you get through reading the whole thing? She doesn't stay in it as she nests on the ground.

I am SOOO excited! We have an appointment to meet him next Tuesday. His current owner called me and we talked for a while about "Morgan". From the discussion, it sounds we would be a good fit. I am just praying that Morgan likes us!!

Ugh.....unfortunatly the owner decide to sell Captain Morgan to his neighbor. We didn't even get a chance to meet him. We were so upset about that. We were really thinking that he was going to be ours.... :(
So our quest continues!

So sorry to hear that... Alexandrines are great pet birds... They're independent, stable temperament and gorgeous to look at...

You might be able to find another one...
