URGENT Help Needed....

I need help with my BHC, who seems very ill..... I would go to a vet, but I live in the middle of nowhere, the only vet near here only really does livestock and hasn't got a clue about exotic birds.....

I came home to find George (my BHC) on the floor, feathers all ruffled, I thought he was dead at first but he's breathing fine. It's just like he's asleep, he's currently lying on my hand snuggling into my chest, still breathing fine, occasionally shaking his head but otherwise nothing......

Any help would be greatly appreciated....

Thankyou....

Could a cat or dog have attacked him? Does he fly? Could he have flown into something? I have no idea what to do, but could you maybe call a vet even tho you don't have one close? Maybe they could give you some advice.

Sorry, I meant to say the floor of his cage.... He's the only animal I have....

I've tried phoning, but they're all closed as it's Sunday.....

Is he eating or drinking anything? Maybe try getting him to drink some water or one of his favorite foods. I am just grasping at straws here. Can he stand?

Hello I know an avian vet is a long way away from you but this is a friend for up to 30 years.z He relies on you and I suggest getting him to the vet.Usually when a bird actually shows signs of sickness they are very sick. This us because they hide their symptoms for fear of being abandoned by the flock. Most vets have emergency services for situations like this any day of the week.:) If you take him to the vet you can be at peace of mind.

Edit: The vets may not offer I emergency services on fathers day I didn't consider that

Thankyou for all the help..... I'm afraid he passed away....

It came on so quick, I wouldn't of had time to get him to the nearest one anyway, even if I did set off as soon as I found him like that......

He did come round for a bit, opening his wings and nuzzling into my neck, but he seemed to have 3 or 4 small fits of some sort and was gone..... I've never had a bird die from an illness like that before, normally just from old age. I don't know if birds can have epilepsy, but that was the first thing I thought of when I saw him fitting......

Thanks again for all the help....

R.I.P George.....

Did anything get sprayed in your house like lysol or anything? Also do you use Non stick cookware? Seems like he was exposed to something.

Thankyou for all the kind messages, he's definitely missed in this house..... He was like my companion, always on my shoulder whilst running my errands round the house. I had more one-on-one time with him, as he really didn't get on with my other birds......

I don't think it's something in the environment, as I have a few other parrots, including a 74 year old African Grey and they all seem to be in perfect health.....
I should of perhaps taken him for an autopsy, but too late now. He had a good send off, and was buried with his favourite toys, and one of my t-shirts he dragged into his cage one day and never let me have it back since haha...... He was a funny little dude, definitely one of a kind.....

It's just unusual for me to lose an animal like that, it's never happened to me before. I've had all my parrots since I was little, most are in their 20's, I got one that's nearly 40 and another that's 74. George was only 18 months old, so it was a real shock.....

Thanks again for the help and kind messages :D.....

So sorry for your loss. Nobody but another bird lover can fully understand what a hole they leave in our lives and hearts. BTW, yes, birds can get epilepsy. And I have to say, "a 74 year old Grey?" That's so great! Mine lived to around 50.
