Bird/Parrot First Aid Kit

A friend is thinking of marketing a Bird/Parrot First Aid Kit. Among other Pet First Aid Kits. What do you guys think would be essential to be in it?

I have one with scissors, vet tape, wooden brace for broken bones, antibiotic oint., pinchers for blood feathers, a card with basic emergency information, a small syringe, sterile 2 by 2's, styptic powder and one packet of bedadine wipe.

I actually got my first aid together after surfing the net, before becoming Mishka's guardian.
Let me tell you it was expensive..... thank goodness I have not had the opportunity to use it.
Heaven help me, there is so much inside the kit, where would I begin.

Made a folder, which is on my desktop

Bird Emergency Card (record bird info/vet phone number)

Magnifying glass, to inspect injuries.
Bottle Styptic Powder for (nails and feather bleeding)

I think it would be a great idea ! A more intensive kit rather then the ones they sell n the pet stores . They have minimal items , but for the " bird smart" people who have more
know how , could use something they can grab and use n a emergency .
Knowing all the items they may need are in there can be such a relief IMO.

I think the first aid kit for Mishka was more expensive than one for a human

You could probably take care of a boy scout group with all that stuff , lolol.
No , I'm kidding , it's a great kit ! I would like to be that prepared !
Our human kit is barely filled but the animals ER kit is overflowing with item , lol

Exactly the same this side, my only human first aid kit, in the apartment is a car first aid kit (still one in the car LoL)

I also have an emergency kit and I have all of Antoinette's items plus a few more that I will list here:


NOTEBOOK AND PEN : to record information and observations

ENVIRONMENTAL THERMOMETER : useful for determining the temperature inside the hospital cage or home-made incubator set up if a thermometer is not already built in.

SMALL ZIP-LOCK BAGS : used to hold samples, such as unusual droppings, vomited material, objects the bird has been chewing on etc.

TOWEL : for wrapping and securing your bird.

TWEEZERS : to pull or remove splinters or other materials.

WIRE CUTTERS : in case bird gets caught in chain or bell on toy.

TOOTHPICKS : can be used to untie small knots tied to bird's foot.

ANTIBIOTIC OINTMENT : ointments are typically not used topically in pet birds, however in certain instances, ointments such as Neosporin can be used for topical wounds. Use only with the direction of your Avian Veterinarian.

PEDIALYTE : used to hydrate dehydrated or stressed birds, be certain to keep checking the expiration date.

LIQUID CALCIUM : such as Calcivet ot Calciboost, in case of weakness due to long term egg laying behavior.

Wow! I never thought about keeping some of those items in a kit for the birds. Granted, my birds have a huge amount of first aid supplies already. I just never thought of things like the wire cutters (I've got a few they're just not in a kit) or pedialyte.

The birds and cats have their own little kits put together and labeled in the hall closet. The human first aid kit is scattered everywhere all over the hall closet. I'm sure we've got all the items in there, but good luck finding them if you really need them. It happened to my father last week when he needed butterfly closures for a nasty split in his finger. :/ Maybe I'll make that my project to organize like the animals have. I know my family won't keep it organized. Grrrr.... at least I know my feathered and furry babies will be taken care of.

I reckon I went overboard Di, I always do

I did my research, and purchased what I thought I had to.

In my experience, cheaper products do exactly the same job.... even if it is less products.

I had to take ideas from a lot of kits and other people's to make mine and with Antoinette's kit (I realized that mine didn't have a compact heating pad which is good to put in the kit) I think we'll all have the best Emergency Bird Kit ever!!! It would be helpful if people keep adding to the list if we missed an important/useful item.

I have this for ALL of us, what "bird specific" items it doesn't have I keep on hand as well
(wire cutters, corn starch,etc.)
