Military Macaw
I have a 40 year old Military Macaw, I got her about 7 years ago from a business that had here and she was very abuised, had a broken wing etc. She has been well until 2 months ago when she started losing weight and plucking feathers, she seems to be eating about the same as always but still losing weight and her feather plucking has gone to extreme with plucking out long tail feathers and bleeding alot which is hard to get stopped. the vet I take her too dont really know alot about birds so he is not much help and we dont have a bird vet anywhere close. Nothing has changed in her life or ours that I can think of to trigger this. Im open to any ideas and help!!

You're in Salina, Kansas? I recommend you do whatever you can to her her to an Avian Vet. Everything you get here will be just guess work. I wish I could help you more but it really sounds like it may be more of something that a blood workup may diagnose. Good luck!

If you make a friend to your bird and start its caring by the adjustment of the fruits and the other good things and remember that constant vaccination surely saved him from the diseases.

i second mollygreencheeks, try to find an avian vet, even if you have to drive a few hours. maybe your current vet can still do blood work? thank you for rescuing him, and i hope he gets better, he's in my thoughts and prayers.

Birds don't need vaccines like other animals.

There is a polyomavirus vaccination available for all parrots, however it's rarely recommended. The disease most often occurs in baby birds. Most adult birds are immune to the disease. The Pacheo Disease vaccine is also rarely recommended. This vaccine has caused many deaths in birds after it is given. There is also a pox virus vaccine, but the protection from disease is poor.
