Hey all,

Our new grey just lost one of her large wing feathers and it appears to have broken off and there is dried blood inside the stem. No fresh blood that I can tell but I was wondering if I need to worry about anything with a piece still being inside? Again, no blood at this time just not sure what to do from here.

If it's not bothering the bird and not currently bleeding, you don't need to do anything with the feather.... although, if a blood feather broke at the base, leaving no shaft outside of the body, then it may be advised to have it pulled.

I would give him a bath to clean it up and so you can see the area a little better. If it was dried inside the shaft of the feather, it's been dead for some time. My Amazon has fallen and broken blood feathers before, depending on how bad, I'll take my hemostats and remove what's left, and put styptic powder over the area with a Q-tip.
