Help needed

Hi i have an African Grey parrot called Elvis, he was fine this morning said peek aboo as usual, this is his way of saying i want to get up, since he has been up his breathing has changed, been on the phone to several vets in the last hour, PDSA have offered to put Elvis to sleep (not happening as yet) His breathing is short and rasping, he has however started to move around his cage a little more, his eyes are bright. We have had Elvis nearly two years and we have never seen this with him, he has had several owners in the past, one of which was very cruel to him, he is a stressy little thing though due to treatment received by previous owners.

Any help greatly appreciated

who is PDSA? can any of the vets see you today?? how is his breathing now?

Nobody on this forum is going to be able to diagnose your grey's problem(s). If X-rays are needed, the only way that is going to happen is with the bird anesthetized.....Similarly, if blood or other samples need to be drawn, they are much easier performed with the bird incapacitated...trying to do these procedures while the bird is awake, causes stress for the bird.....

Why are you against them putting the bird to sleep? Elvis can't tell you what's wrong.....

How old ? Over weight? VitA issues? It can be risky putting sick/older birds under anesthesia , that's a judgement call. Does your AV have any history with this bird? Most AVs don't want to be to invasive , they do the "let's try this and see what happens". I'd explore VitA defencies and secondary infections in older rehomes with a history of poor diet.Got any Medical Records ? Where's Preston ? You anywhere near me ?

IMO & from past experience to put it bluntly I wouldn't trust the PDSA to treat the ant on the step of my backdoor let alone a pet I love. Most vets that work/volunteer for them are generally young, either straight out of vet school or still there & are doing it to gain experience. And very, very few would be AV's. You would be better of taking her to a proper AV & at least get a full and proper diagnosis.
