Hello,

My Eclectus, Poe, is low in vitamin D due to it being winter.
Is human grade vitamin D ok?
I know that the body cannot overdose on vitD as it is processed out in the urine/poo, so even though I would be offering only a drop in his food, I just wanted to know if anyone has read whether this is ok?

My vet offers a bird-variety vitD but it's expensive and I figured human grade would be just fine in smaller doses. (My other vet for my dog actually recommended human grade glucosamine for his aging joints, so it's not like animals cannot process human vitamins.)

Any researched advice would be great.
Thanks

You CAN overdose on VitD. You generally cannot 'naturally' overdose on VitD (sunlight, foods,) but you can by using supplements.

Human grade is generally filled with fillers and crap and that's why they are so cheap. For example, from your supermarket or general vitamin store you might get 40% actual vitamin, 60% filler. However; go to an actual specialist and you'll get more along the lines of 90% vitamin, 10% filler. But it drives the cost up.

You are honestly probably best to just get the vitamins from the vet as they're tailored for your fid. You can also buy sunlamps that work as natural sunlight does on your bird, encouraging natural vitamin D production. :)

I suggest the lamp as you said "with it being winter" so I presume that extra 'sunlight' will certainly help him out. Lots of people have them and they're great, just like normal lamps but with special bulbs.
