Today I stopped by a local petstore because my usual petstore was out of dog food and I had only been in there once when I was looking for some coral for my tank. Anyway, I went back to the bird section and was in a room with a bunch of tiny bird cages and rodents. The smell was horrible and all the cages were littered with poop and it looked like they hadnt been cleaned out. The first bird I saw had almost no feathers, next was a few birdcages with African Greys and an some other type of large bird in cages that were not the right size for them. Finally, I saw some smaller cages with around ten parakeets in each. One that I saw had an overgrown beak that had twisted around its nose. Sometimes I wonder why places like this dont have less birds or take care of them. All they have to do is just trim the beak and nails or just not have so many birds.

Apparently WVA, along with Alabama, Alaska, Idaho, Kentucky & New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Washington and Wyoming have no laws which regulate the sale of animals in pet shops and do not protect animals housed and sold in pet shops.

I don't know how up to date their info is, but you can look around here: The Current State of Pet Shop Laws

You need to SAY something to the pet store employee working at the time, ask to speak to the manager or owner and SAY something to them. The reason there are not federal laws governing pet stores in the U.S. is because they serve the public and the public supposedly monitors the conditions in which critters are kept. If we see things like this and do not SAY something then who will?

Go back and check on them please. Tell them you will be back in a week. Hound them, please. If they refuse to do something about the animals in their care, then I think you have every right to tell them you are going to go public with what you have seen.

They surely do not want an article in the local paper!

that is just sickening, and is animal cruelty.
obviously they don't care about the birds or their living conditions.
what gets me is they still ask for top dollar for birds that are in poor condition.
did you complain?

How awful! I would definitely speak up, loud and often, and if nothing changed, I would go to the media...bad press might make them rethink the way they do things.
Poor little birds :(

Could you go to the ESPCA (I'm not sure of the name, I know there's a programme on the Animal Channel called Animal Cops etc) and see if they would help? Or are they not in the dericstriction? (I don't live in the US). If not, then I would speak up, be a voice for them, cause the can't be vocal about the state etc.

I'm also in WV. Just curious what area this store is in? I wouldn't hesitate to talk to a manager or owner if there's a concern. If it isn't addressed, I'd speak with the county animal shelter. There has to be laws that cover this sort of thing here, because I know of some pet store owners that have been brought up on charges in the past for things like this.
