I purchased a sun conure in January from an aviary. The 5-month old baby didn't last one night in our house.
We had a necropsy done and here's what I don't understand... how many necropsy results and avian vets does it take to perform one?
The first verbal result said that the bird had a congenital heart defect and had a heart attack. The written result said that it had no issues that would have caused its death. There were no toxins present nor any physical reason why this baby should have died.
The aviary agreed to replace the bird with a recently hatched sun conure that we could see in a couple of weeks to start bonding with it before it would come home with us.
The night before we were to meet the new bird, I got a call from the aviary that said the bird's body was shipped across the country for another necropsy. This one said that the bird died from severe head trauma and brain damage. When I asked her how this could have happened, she told me the vet seems to think that we either threw the bird against the wall or stepped on its head. Neither of those things happend.
We've sued her and won, so that is not the issue.
Sorry this got long, but what are the usual steps in a necropsy? Wouldn't it usually be one vet and done? It seems to me that because I gave custody of the bird's body to the aviary, she wanted to ensure the results of the necropsy were in her favor and that is why the body was shipped somewhere else... if that place even existed across the country.
In the meantime, we bought Igor, a Jenday Conure from Petco. He loves my son and I and doesn't like anyone else. He's doing great and is starting to mimic us. We just love him to pieces.
