so my plan is to put all the bird cages outside for a the 4 hours of cleaning time and a couple of hours afterward... Anyone have any other thoughts/ advice on this? The doors and windows will be wide open to air out any fumes that might occur...

You're doing it the right way by placing your fids outside while the oven is going through the self-clean cycle. :)

Open windows, turn on fans, and let the house air thoroughly before bringing them back in.

Yes i wouldn't DREAM of doing it with them in the house! I used to (pre-birds) turn it on at night so that it cleaned while we slept... Now I wait for good weather that I can put the birds outside in (which means just basic oven wipe with a soapy cloth all winter long!) and plan for a full day of fun in the sun for the birds!

Do you think a couple of hours after it's done will be enough time?

I think 2-3 hours AFTER it's done should be enough as long as you have REALLY good airflow going through your house. :)

I hear you about having to wait for nice weather. In the winter months I'm scrubbing the oven myself. UGH...what a PITA. :32:

I'm waiting till end of summer to do mine LOL too hot right now!
I've done it with the fids outside and brought them in a few hour later, no problem as Wendy said, just have the house opened up with fans running.

Luckily where we live it is frequently windy so with both the back and front doors open, there is LOTS of air flow through the house!

Thanks for the feedback; this is the first time I have done it since getting the birds, other than when I was away for a couple of days and took Wilbur with me...I would hate to hear that something could go wrong with the way I am planning on doing it!

We no longer use the self cleaning feature on our oven. My husband found a good product which is Easy Off oven cleaner. It is fume free but we open everything anyway.

I recently bought a new stove with a cleaning feature that uses water. You put in 10 ounces of water in the bottom of the oven, clean cycle for 15 minutes and it's supposed to use steam to clean. Haven't had a need to clean it yet...does anyone else have one like this?

That steam cleaning sounds so much better! I wonder if I could do something like that just with a pan of water and a high bake cycle??

I would not use Easy-Off, or any other chemical cleaner, "fume-Free" or not... I just wouldn't trust it!

The Easy Off is better than running the oven for 4 hours. Of course the birds are no where close to the kitchen when this is being done.
