Yes, a veterinarian. Get him in for a check up.

In regards to his beak: if it is flaking or peeling that is fairly normal, but a vet or experienced groomer can trim and polish it up. If it is actually cracking then you need to get him to an avian vet ASAP.

thanks for the reply, i managed to get a photo of the crack - it didn't appear to be this big a few days ago. You can touch the beak and everything and he doesn't mind too much so it's not like it's sore. If anyone can shed any more light on the attached photo that would be great. Like we said previously, he's a very healthy bird eating lorikeet dry mix, he bathes everyday, has a big clean cage and eats LOTS of fresh fruit and nectar. He's out of his cage all the time playing with us and flying around so seems like a very happy bird.

Also, we have another rainbow lorikeet, is it best to keep them seperated just incase he is getting sick?

That looks like flaking/peeling which is perfectly normal particularly as they are growing. If you do not get him in to a vet or groomer to file it down he will likely rub it against perches or objects in his cage. Does he have stone and rope perches? These are the best for this purpose.

So I don't think the beak is a sign of illness. However I cant say anything about the smell. Does he still have the smell after a good bath? Loris can get pretty messy with their food - I'm sure that can't smell good.

thanks for the reply, you've certainly put my partners mind at ease, he started getting pretty emotional thinking something was happening to his baby! he has a small stone perch but his main perch is wood, so we may get that changed.

the smell has gone away - he does bath regularly so not sure what it was.

We always want to make sure he has plenty to do in his cage so there's a variety of different sized perches and toys - always a skewer hanging off the top of the cage with different fruits on it (he loves his mango, apple and grape ones) :)

Haven't thought too much about different varieties of perches though but we'll definately invest in some. Thanks for the info.
