This is not a parrot question, but I thought some of you could probably help anyways.

My mom recently got a large aviary and put all of her finches and small birds into it together, including two male canaries. She knew the males might not work together but sometimes that can work with one dominating and the other more submissive, so she wanted to try.

A few days later, while I was observing the cage, the canaries started to fight. It took about 20 minutes for us to get them separated and get the more dominant one out. The green canary that we removed ended up flying around the room for a moment before he was fully subdued and placed in his old cage.

The next day, I noticed the green canary was holding its left eye alittle more shut than the right. It was a bit puffed up but otherwise active. The right eye was bright and normal, the left looked "sleepy".

Today, my mom tells me that her canary has crusty stuff around that eye. She asked me to do some online research to see if we can help him without going to the vet.

I suspect its an injury either from the fight or being caught and moved. Its also possible the bird has an infection or some unrelated issue, but I dont know much about health to be able to tell her an answer.

Can you guys help me diagnose whats wrong and maybe help the little bird out a bit? My mom is having some family issues which are hurting us financially so going to a vet is unreasonable at this time. I read somewhere that using saline drops can be beneficial but im not about to do anything to the bird without consulting people who know more than a google search.

Thanks. :rainbow1:

** I am not posting pictures at the moment because the bird wont sit still long enough to snap anything, hes showing his left eye very little, and I dont want to stress him out but catching him just for a quick picture. If you guys really need a pic I can do that later.

Hi there-
I breed canaries, it sounds like you should take him to the vets. I understand how expensive they can be, but better to get a proper diagnosis than guess, he will die if you don't. they don't have the immune system to fight off infection and it will spread.

chances are he's gotten an infection from the fight. even though it's a fairly large aviary, 2 male canaries will fight.

I can't house mine together either, thus all the cages I have.
some of my cockatiels don't get along and have to be housed separately as well.

make sure you see an AVIAN vet, not a regular vet.
please keep us posted, btw, canaries are one of my very favourites:)
