6 mo old Eclectus :)
I have a 6 month old Eclectus. My husband and I fell asleep for maybe 2 hours. Wake up to this --> imgur: the simple image sharer . It looks like he just tore it up, aka, pulled off pieces and spit them out all over. He seems to be doing fine, is eating, no labored breathing, normal squawking. How scared should I be because right now I am shi**ing bricks.

The last avian vet and only "avian" vet I took him to was a joke and don't know of any in the area for emergencies. It is almost 10:30 pm where I live as well. From what I read, even if I could find a vet, the outlook is bleak. I'm scared for my baby. Thanks for any ideas :eek::eek::eek:

Yes it is toxic, mostly near the pit and skin. Please call this number open 24 hours a day and see what they say to do. Animal Poison Control Center at 1-800-548-2423

Avocado poisoning doesn't show symptoms right away, but can affect internal organs.

Please keep us posted.

Nicki, while not a solution to your immediate problem, you might want to read through this thread, from earlier this year: http://www.parrotforums.com/general-parrot-information/25687-parrots-avocados-2.html

Also, there is a national pet poison hot line, that is available 24/7, for a consultation fee of $39...which also covers followups.....

800-213-6680
Pet Poison Hotline, Animal Poison Control Center, Pet Poison Helpline

The ASPCA maintains a 24/7 hotline also, that used to be run out of the University Of Illinois School of Vet Medicine in Urbana, IL..... their number is (888) 426-4435 but the last time I checked, they had a $50 or higher fee, but it also includes follow ups.....

Good luck.....

I found a Emergency Vet that deals with parrots and called them, consulted the vet there and he said he would be more concerned if it were repeat ingestions. I know I have them to go to if anything starts to falter in the next few hours. They told me to monitor him for breathing and inability to perch and to not cause any unneeded stress.

Meanwhile, I'm sitting here a nervous wreck and hes looking at me like 'what's wrong mommy?'

I hope the fact that it was very unripe helps, so it wasn't mushy where he could accidentally ingest it. Which was the reason I even had it out :( UGH. Why did I keep a toxic fruit on the counter with a bird free? Ugh. Hes been on a 'tear veggies apart and spit em out' thing lately instead of eating them. I hope it was the case here as well :( Going to be a long night.

Oh you already called a place. We posted at the same time! Yes I bet that it helps that the avocado wasn't ripe.
Good luck!

I prayed for you guys. I really hope everything is alright. I get like that all the time because Kirby seems to be able to get into absolutely everything, so I know how you feel. I'm so sorry that happened to you!

So sorry I haven't updated!! He is fine and had no adverse reactions. He was just fine the next morning, maybe a bit grumpy from me waking him up all the time to make sure he was ok!
I guess it not being ripe and him just tearing it up was a big help.

Thanks all for your concern!!

I must admit I was too scared to read this thread, knowing how toxic avo's are for birds.
Kept praying the outcome would be good news, dreading the worst

I am so relieved with the outcome

You really have to stay a jump ahead of them, don't you? The Beaks have recently discovered the fruit bowl on the kitchen table. I ducked out to use the bathroom the other day and returned to find them parked atop a pile of apples and pears which they'd considerately tested for me. Every single fruit had a great hulking chomp taken out of it!

Then, yesterday, Barney was checking out the dish drainer and the kitchen window when he discovered a sachet of majorly toxic drain cleaner (left there by my husband). He had already chomped a hole in the sachet before I managed to prise it out of his beak. I got the chills just thinking about what strong alkali could do to a bird! I'm glad your Eclectus is fine, Nicki - your story's been a wake-up call to all of us and thanks for posting it. :)

I see if my birds were flighted, I would have to bird proof everything 24/7. Too much work for me! It was tough enough to child proof my house with 3 young kids. I still have to tell family members on a regular basis what they can and cannot do around our birds after all these years of bird ownership.
