Guava tree log - could it be the reason my parrot is sick?

About 3 weeks ago I cut a guava branch and found a dried mini log which was also a guava. They had both not been treated with any pesticides so I thought it would be fine. Hugo got sick a week ago with sneezing and was off. I took him to the vet and he is slowly not sneezing as much. A thought hit me today that maybe it could be the dried guava log that is making him sneeze. I looked at it closer and there is dried moss - not wet but dried growing on it and have scraped it off. The inside was a bit moist when I got it but looking at it now its dry. He chews on it alot. Can anyone advise me?

I am using a willow branch for a perch. I did wash it and cook in the oven at 300 for 1/2 hr or so. No problems with sickness. Hope Hugo gets better.

Thanks SB, will wash down the log and perch and squeeze the log into the oven - will try anything at this point.

The guava wood itself is on the safe list, but there's a fair chance that something growing on it could be a problem. Just cook any wood before giving it to them as SB recommended.

I agree with Auggie's dad that something could be growing on it could be the problem.
May I make a suggestion !!!!! Take out the guava wood for a while, and see if there is any improvement.
Hope Hugo makes a speedy recovery.

Thanks Antionette and AG, Im going to take them both away and then try squash them in the oven and cook them. Its amazing how little things could be the cause for something big. Will keep you posted of whether its the wood thats making him sick.

I use dogwood...I really like it. I dont have any store pereches at all.

I build most of the toys for Sammy (U2) out of lumber yard bought kiln dried lumber.which I cut and drill and it goes in the oven at 350 for 1 hour. I did a lot of research on temp and time to make sure germs are killed before it goes to Sammy. in the future I would bump yours up just a little.

I've always been shy about wood because it's hard to clean and keep clean.
Would you recommend periodic baking??????

I've never used wood perches or stands for exactly the same reason, I'm always afraid of bacteria, mold, etc. growing on it...The OP's bird apparently died, I don't know if it was from the wood or not but it was only 2 years old 😢. If it was from not baking the wood initially I understand, but I don't know if periodic baking would help or not, I'd think so. After all you'd definitely be killing whatever might be on it. Can't hurt. I feel horrible about the OP's baby bird though...
