Help! Cat tore parrots tail

Parrot is green, alexander or parakeet, dont know for sure.
A cat pulled out the tail of our parrot when it was in the cage outside in the lawn. Although it shouted and made noise, there doesnt seem to be any bleeding or blood stains on the feathers. Should i be worried about it will the tail grow back and in approxiamately how much time? Thankyou

Do you have photos of your bird?

Birds have a "fight or flight" response. They prefer to avoid conflict with predators, so if they are ever captured by a predator, they have the ability to "drop" or rather, release, their tail and flight feathers. This can help to ensure an escape should the need ever arise.

So if there's no blood and your bird isn't hurt, the feathers should start to grow back rather quickly! May take about a month or so for them all to grow back in, and the new feathers may be in danger of breaking since there are no supporting full grown feathers around them... but your bird will be fine!

However, for future reference, it would be best not to leave your bird outside unsupervised.

As MonicaMc said, the tail feathers should grow back just fine, and it shouldn't take too long. If there is any blood, though, you should take your bird to the vet, asap, because cats have a bacteria in their saliva which can be deadly to birds. Even a small scratch could kill your bird. So long as you don't see any cuts and your bird seems ok, I wouldn't worry too much, though. Just don't leave him/her outside unsupervised again.

Yes, there doesnt seem to be any blood on the feathers so i guess there wasn't any severe bleeding or any bleeding for that matter.

Well, actually, they might never grow back. If the pull was hard enough to damage the follicles, no feather will ever grow there. I have a cockatiel that had his tail caught in a door (at least, that's what the previous owner said) and they never grew back (his name used to be Chloe but it's now Donald because of his duck tail and the fact that he is a male)

I hope all goes well for your poor little tail-less baby. He must have been scared to death. A few weeks ago a neighbor put her 3 caged finches outside, cage hanging about 4 ft off ground outside house. when she went outside later, the cage was on floor, smashed and broken in pieces scattered around and finches gone. Bear !! Small and especially caged animals are prey when outside alone. I'm sure you thought your fid would be safe outside in a cage. I appreciate when people share these stories so that others can take heed.

Thankyou soo much for you reply, and oh poor finches, i hope they are fine. Yeah thats what we thought that it would be safe outside in lawn cause it was inside the cage, but ... =[. And yeah the parrot is fine now, eating normally, and speaking fine aswell. Lets hope he gets a tail soon =D Thankyou sooo very much for you concern and time =] BYe
