2 x rainbow lorikeets. Pistachio is a normal coloured 1 1/2 yo birdie who's currently on a diet and Zazu is my grey/green or olive baby, about 4 moths old
Hi All,

My bird has a vet appt later on today (in around 2 hours). He's currently got pin feathers around his head (which I'm hoping might be the cause, though its never been before)

He's quiet (normally hes the loudest bird on the planet), he's barely eating and hasn't done since yesterday morning. He's drowsy and sleeping lots, very cuddly (not him at all, he despises cuddles) and will just sit while you run your hand over him, rather than the normal, bite and grab and play.

I'm really worried (hence the vet appt) but just wondering if these thingsmight be caused by pin feathers???

Good luck at the Vet app! It does sound like he might be a little sick, but hopefully they will pick it up fast and begin treatment so he can get back to his usual self! :)

I find when my bird is pinning, her personality is exactly the same, except maybe a little less inclined to have pats.

Yeah thats pretty much my experience with the pinning...

He's currently on my shoulder asleep, which in the 2 years of his life he has NEVER done!

I'm very worried :(

Aw don't worry, if he is sick, its good you are getting him to the vet so you can get him better asap! My bird has been sick a few times, and I know its scary, but you are doing everything right at the moment, just wait until the vet's verdict :)

So the vet thinks there's nothing wrong. His crop was a bit empty but other than that, all vital signs were apparently good. We've been advised to keep him warm and feed him wet food and to keep an eye on him.

He ate a heap of wet food when we got home so that's a good thing. Guess it's just wait and see now .....

Some birds have a rough time moulting.

Was it an avian vet? Did they check his poop for bacteria?

It wasn't unfortunately as we don't have any at all in our area. And no they didn't, they said if he continued to be unwell that that was the next step.

In saying that she wasn't an avian vet, they do treat a lot of birds, and I was advised to go to them by a local breeder

Hopefully it's nothing. A heavy molt will take a lot out of a bird and make them tired.

Are you giving extra calcium?

I'm not, I didn't really think about it but will definitely look into it, and his latest molt has actually been really heavy, now that I think about it.

Thanks

Just thought I'd give a quick update to those of you who replied, Pistachio seems to be much more himself today. He's still a little quiet but I can definitely see my boy in him again.

Spoke to the vet when she did her follow up all about the calcium and she said it was a good idea, so off there this afternoon to get some.

Thanks again for all of your responses, much appreciated!

They get Paswell Complete Lorikeet, generally dry but wet while Pistachio was recovering, plus a random selection of fruits and veg, favourites being broccoli and green apple but also give them carrot, capsicum, steamed sweet potato, zucchini, cauliflower, corn or whatever else we have in the fridge plus plenty of fresh water.

Also Pistachio is back to full health (and volume)

Thanks MikeyTN. Any thoughts/suggestions on the diet? I've kinda just designed it around a bit of research but real life opinions are always appreciated :)
