Sometime Wednesday my roughly 30 year old cockatoo laid an egg (she has laid about one or two ever year for the last 10 years) and has been fluffy and lethargic since-possible a little worse today then Thursday-she seems stiff or sore now. Still eating, drinking, pooping. But just not feeling well. I took her to an avian vet last night and she took blood and gave her some fluids but did not feel an egg (enough that she didn't feel the need for an xray)-she did agree with me that her abdomen seemed a bit enlarged/distended. She had a similar episode about four years ago and came out of it but we were never quite sure what the problem was-the vet had me switch her from seed to pellets at that point and we have been fine since until now. I am supposed to hear back on her blood in the next hour or two but any advice/experiences would be so appreciated-starting to panic...

I have just found when I touch that round mass (soft/squishy--doesn't feel like an egg to me) in her abdomen she arches herself as if it hurts, could that be her liver?

Vet just called and said she thinks she has a low grade chronic infection and I have an appt to get antibiotics, vitamin B, and iron shots. Anyone have experience with an infection like this?

I just wanted to wish you luck. I'm a wanna be parront, and reading this has me worried for your baby. Let us know how it turns out, please

Thank you both <3 Got back from the vet about 2 hours ago and the iron shot made her throw up but the tech said that is normal-she has eaten and drank on her own and her poop still looks good just very lethargic. Checking on her every 20 mins and keeping her warm. If she can just make it long enough to let the antibiotic start working...

Thank you all-It's so hard but your kind words mean a lot <3 I spoke to the vet right before she passed and she said she would do a necropsy if I wanted and at first I said no (although that is awesome of her) but I have decided that I do want it done and will post what she finds when I get the results just in case anyone is interested.

I lost a 38 yr old amazon to cancer on Thursday, i know your heart broken but get the necropsy done. I have many older birds and anything we can learn to help them live better lives is a blessing. Hugs to you.

Oh my goodness I am so sorry. The only comfort I could get out of that is my bird dying in my arms rather than finding her passed on the cage floor.

I just started reading the thread from the beginning and my heart and stomach sank when I read that she passed. I am so sorry...

I would definitely like to know what your vet thinks. We have a young bare eyed (4 years old) and would definitely want to learn from your experience. We lost a cockatiel to chronic egg laying and having females of any species is a worry and your story is a nightmare I am so sorry you've been thru.

Thank you for sharing with us, I can't imagine how hard this is for you, it really is incredibly sweet and thoughtful for you to share your experience.
