Facial Skin/Beak HELP

Rosie's skin appears to be pealing off her beak. It looks like it may bleed when I get a look under the pulled up skin.

I noticed this about 10 minutes ago and called the vet. We have an appointment for 2, but her regular avian vet isn't there today. The receptionist assured me that this vet is very good, but I am a nervous wreck.

She has been quieter than usual and was playing on her cage floor this morning. Which is unusual, but I thought she had just taken an interest in one of her foraging balls.

Has anyone seen this before?

That does look painful. I've never seen anything like it before.

Is it possible Rosie somehow injured herself on something? Did she get stuck on something and pulled away???

The new avian vet Northstar has is PHENOMENAL. She has a stellar reputation. I know you must be worried sick, especially because Dr. Doolen isn't there today. Take a deep breath!! She will be fine.

I don't think this is anything serious!!!!

Are you talking about the area where the beak joins the face? I can see the lifting in the last pic you posted. I haven't seen that before but I'm new at this. Holding thumbs that the vet has positive news for you. How long is it untill it is 2 where you are?

I am just not sure. She has been acting like something is caught in the upper inside of her beak off and on so maybe she scratched it too hard??

Thank you for checking. I feel much better knowing you like the new vet and she has a good reputation. I grilled the poor receptionist. I was very worried especially after hearing the horror stories of others. She is my baby and I am a worrywart.

Yes. The first pic is of the area where it is peeling, kind of like a hangnail would.

Thank you. It is almost noon, so about 2 hours. If it gets worse I can go as an emergency, fortunately we are only about 5 minutes from NorthStar. But the price goes up considerably when you go to the er, so I am hoping she will be ok until then. She is climbing all over me, putting holes in my shirt as I type. So hopefully she isn't too miserable.

I told her we were going to shower so she is going to be furious when she realizes it's a no go. But it is way to cold to go out after, even with blow drying.

Of course you HAD to grill the receptionist! Any good parront would.

From the behaviour you describe, I think she's feeling ok and think (hope) it is probably just a little booboo that can easily be fixed.

We JUST got home. Dr. Mickley is very nice. She was not able to handle Rosie, unfortunately. So we will go back on Saturday to see Dr. Doolen.

While we were there, Dr Mickley said she wished she could get the flaky skin off. So when she left the room, I removed it. With it removed, her nasal area looks more swollen. So the vet thinks she may have a sinus issue or it may just be hurt. I am hoping she will be better by Saturday. My poor baby was crying and shaking by the time we left.

Was Steven assisting her?

I think the nasal area might be swollen due to the tissue you removed.

Is Rosie sneezing a whole lot? Runny nose? Any discharge at all?

Stressed is right, poor little thing. We were there forever.

No, Steven wasn't there and the assistant didn't help besides asking questions in the beginning. I think the beak scares most people. Dr. Mickey actually called Steven to check about making an appointment. I wish he had been there.

It may be, but the skin just flaked off. She has been sneezing more than usual, but I figured it was due to the massive amount of tiny down feathers she is losing at the moment.

She seems fine. Bossy and eating/playing.

Her skin around the beak is the same, still pulled away. It is still slightly swollen but thankfully not as much and not as red. Thanks for checking.

Will do. Although I am keeping my fingers crossed it goes back to normal before then.

. Yesterday was such a long drawn out ordeal for her. I worried she will freak if we go back tomorrow.

I've been looking for this thread! Sorry the vet visit was such an ordeal for Rosie!!

Why was the vet not able to handle her? Is she inexperienced with birds? I have to say though - that is some impressive beak weaponry Ms Rosie is sporting, I'd be wary of it too

Glad Rosie is doing a bit better. Please let us know what your regular vet says tomorrow.

The vet just seemed nervous about Rosie's beak. She tried several times but couldn't towel Rosie, it was a bit of a mess.

Here's hoping everything turns out fine tomorrow. I know how nervous you must feel. Keep her warm till then. Vet visits are always an ordeal to most birds. Try to get back to your normal routine as best you can, so she will be less stressed. Treats, cuddles and happy things. I wonder what it could be? Let us know how it goes. Will be sending you good vibes in the mean time.
