My Barraband is looking pretty rough at the moment. Just lately he has started breaking feathers on his tail and wings. This happened not long after i got him (april/may last year) while he was young and learning to fly (crashing a lot) and seemed to be just before he moulted. He is pretty good at flying now and hasnt broken a feather (until now) for a long time. I wonder if it has anything to do with an up coming moult? Or is there some other reason this could be occurring? He looks in good condition apart from the broken feathers, he was put in a new cage about November but has had plenty of time in it (and seems happy there) before this started.

He gets a seed pellet mix (though doesnt eat the pellets), soak seed, sprouted seeds, fruit and vege daily. He also gets a conditioning food every now and then, scrambled egg, pasta etc as a treat.

Thoughts?

When birds are young they're really rough on their feathers especially tail feathers. Sometimes it can takeccouple of years before they take better care of their feathers. I have one that turned 2 and he's just now taking better care of his tail where it's not always busted.

Yea it never worried me earlier but i just thought it was odd that he hadnt broken ANY for so long now all of a sudden he has broken a ton in the space of a week on not only his tail but wings as well (He flies wonky now haha). Thats why i wondered if it could be linked to moulting?

Nah not from molting but just their carelessness! :)

I am having the same issue with one of my younger cockatiels. I purchased him from the bird show back in October, and was beautiful!....now not so much.

It's my only cockatiel this has happened too.

His entire tail has broken off, with the exception of one feather.....and it was such a beautiful tail too :(

Barry broke all of his tail feathers when he was younger and looked so silly!! He looks rough at the moment but its a bit funny watching him try to fly. He knows he cant fly very well with his broken wings so doesnt try anything to hard but when he does fly its pretty funny XD
