Beak/Nostril problem

Hi, having noticed what I thought was poop or food dried on his beak, I managed to clean it off to discover a "hole" just below the nostril. Which makes me think that it was dried blood. Kiwi is acting and eating normally but it looks terrible and am not sure what to do. Have any quaker or parrot owners come across anything similar to this? It looks like the beak has deteriorated just below the nostril.

Have you tried gently cleaning it up with some luke warm water to see if there is some sort of injury? How longs has it been like this?

How is he acting?

If in doubt, I'd recommend taking him to the closest avian vet and have your baby assessed there.

What would cause the beak to deteriorate like that?

Edit: I had to come back to this and take another look. I don't know if that is normal color for a Quakers beak, but if it isn't then the whole beak looks unhealthy. I don't want to scare you but if that is the case, I suggest taking your bird to an experience avian vet. Hopefully other Quaker owners will chime in her.

I agree with socalwendy, it doesn't look in the best condition, and that whole is not normal.....I think a vet visit is in order.

Thank you for your advice. He is acting so normally that's it hard to believe anything is amiss. The first time I noticed anything was about a month ago where he had what looked like dried poop or something on his beak. Following a shower/good soaking, I was able to remove it and didn't see anything unusual. As for the beak color, I think it's always been like that. Unless, its been such a very slow and gradual change that I didn't notice it. Then, last week, i noticed again the dried "poop" on his beak and couldn't get it off. So, again, gave him a good soaking under the shower and was able to remove it. That's when I noticed the "hole"!! Unfortunately, I haven't gotten a lot of feedback other from you three. So, thank you again!! :green2:

The hole doesn't look good. Personally I would see a vet about it. Here is a photo of my girls beak. Hope it helps

I'd be very concerned. An avian vet would give you the best feedback in this situation. I would advice seeing one as soon as you can. Wishing your bird the best.

Thx for the update. Please take your baby to the vet. It's not just the hole I am seeing that concerns me. Maybe it's the angle but there are other parts of his beak that do not look healthy.

Poor baby, it looks pretty bad. :-( Could diet be 1 factor in his beak health?

Agreed, pse take her to the vet. That beak doesn't look healthy. Remember, birds mask illness for a long time so be careful about assuming all is well just because she behaves normally. Good luck to you both.

I know this is a month old and the OP may not even see this... I hope their bird is ok!

The hole in the beak like that is usually either caused by an injury or due to a sinus infection. If left untreated, a sinus infection can deteriorate the beak away.
