I have just finished rescuing Barry from getting his leg ring caught for the second time =( Its nowhere near as bad as the first time, luckily i realized quickly after it happened but he isnt very happy, it breaks my heart. I am definitely getting it removed now. The first time he had been caught up for a while i think after i had been out all day and he was bleeding and sore for a few days. Today no blood and luckily i was able to untangle him fairly easily because i was on my own but there was no way he was getting free by himself. It breaks my heart, he is never this quiet, poor little burdy =( I am very glad Nelson doesnt have one, its one less to worry about.

Where can i get it removed?

Lucky you caught it in time. Good decision on having it removed, those things are potential death-traps :(

I open leg-band my parrots offspring (so the ones I hand-raise) just so I can tell them apart, as some of them look almost IDENTICAL. But one thing I always offer to the buyers of the bird is to remove it, as it can be rather dangerous if it get's caught on something. So I always make sure they are aware, but that's why i open-leg band.. so they can be removed easily. (our open leg-bands have a tiny fold, so if you have say one of those fine jewelry pliers they are very easy to remove) but as everyone says, the Vet should be able to do it for you.

Though, I have started thinking about closed banding them... Been hearing awful stories about open leg-banded birds.. :/

I feel so sorry for your little guy :( Hopefully he perks up a bit soon.

What type of band? Open or closed(ring) ? Open type you yourself might be able to cut , with the right tool. Closed or "ring" type might need to be done with a vet and a "power" tool.

My vet got my conures off with lubricant and alot of manipulation. It freaked me out a little to watch, bending the toes a certain way and working it of.. It took about 5 minutes. I thought for sure his leg would be sore after but not in the slightest. She's done it hundreds of times. Hopefully your vet will be able to work it off without having to use a tool :) it sounds like its too loose anyway.

It is an open one, he isnt big on handling though and especially without my partner home to help and the right tools i think i will leave it to someone who knows what they are doing =D

I'd like to get Madge's removed too. It's useful for telling the Beaks apart, since Madge has a bracelet and Barney doesn't, but Madge hates the bracelet and worries at it all the time. Lately, the skin has flaked a little round her ankle and I worry that she could start picking at it. I wish I were braver and could hold her while Hubby cut the ring off. I know exactly how deeply those big red beaks can bite, though, so I'm not gonna chance it. Must make an appointment with the vet. :(

A friend of mine has offered to have a look and possibly take it off on Sunday so i am very pleased about that. The reason i dont rush straight to the vets is although we have vets locally that will see birds i cant actually find any info on anyone nearby who specializes in them.
