Symptoms of crop impaction?

Hi everyone! Don't worry, I don't have a medical emergency here or anything. I was just curious as to what the symptoms for crop impaction were, if any? I've recently read plenty of stories of parrots ingesting fibrous material from rope toys and such that ended up impacting their crops. From what I've read, it seems like there aren't really any early symptoms, and the bird dies pretty suddenly. Is this true, or are there symptoms that a bird will show as foreign material is slowly building up in the crop?

I'm only a little concerned because of this toy that my sun conure, Elly, has. It has rainbow curly shoe laces that she loves to chew and stretch out. It looks kind of like the toy here in this picture.

I don't think she is really eating any of it, she usually is just gnawing on the laces. I guess, I just want to know what I should look for if I ever suspect that she has ingested this stuff. The laces fray a little bit after she's chewed on them for a while, but I don't think she is biting off the super tiny strands and eating them. I can't even pull them off myself. Though, I'll probably just get rid of the toy all together to be safe. Are there safer alternatives for a toy like this?
