DearFriends, Emmy is looking bad Any of you who pray please pray for Emmy. She has been quieter than usual. Didn't think anything of it.Tonite I saw what looked like poop or her foot. After soaking it I realized it's a bad infection.Don't know how this could have happened unless someone pinched her in the door and didn't tell me. There is a blister on the side (white) and the top is blackish red.I tried to get her to take doxyclycline in her water.I even put sugar in ( it tasted nasty) she wouldn't take it. I soaked it in warm salt water (she sat in willingly) then put triple antibiotic. We are both retired medically auto accident, really can't afford a vet now. Thanks Bonita :orange:

Oh no, are you able to post a photo of her foot?

What type of salt are you using for the soak? Epson salt will help some, after the foot is cleaned and soaked a bit rub on a little neosporen. I forgot what it's called, but at farm and feed stores there's a liquid numbing/soothing medication you can buy off the counter for cheap. My vet recomended I use it on Rosie's bad leg, and my friend used it on his falcons leg when she had bad squirrel bite wounds. But can't remember the name haha.

Hope her foot does better. If he for worsens take her to a vet, decide in a budget and let the vet know that's all you can spend. Have the vet decided on what's most important for treatment for your budget.

dear Copperarabian and Allee, I might be able to post a picture later. Need some help .I was just using regular salt but I am going out to get Epson salt and the salve from farm store. It seems about the same. There are no good bird vets here the only one here I had dealings with once and was very disappointed. Will not return to her unless dire emergency. Thanks so much for your help and concern. Bonita :orange: Will keep you updated.

The farm medication you'll mix with water(already nearly waterlike) and you can run it on the toe, or you a spray bottle to mist the toe.

That sucks there are no good avian vets in your area, do you have any dog vets you know well? My friends and I both use the same avian vet(for the birds), but he also gets medication from his dog vet with no visit for his birds(he takes his dogs there). Baytril, and such. Just have to know the dosage

Dear friends, Emmy has an appointment tomorrow at 2:20 we have to go to Harrisburg it's about an hour each way .Emmy is rarely in a car only a couple times in her life. She's being very brave but has been in her nest (cotton rope hide away) almost all day. She snuggled in my hair about 6:00 am when I checked on her. Pray they can give her a shot she refuses to cooperate with any thing in her mouth that isn't her choosing. I only slept 2 hrs. last night. My pets illness is worse than my childrens. Thanks for your concern. Her toe nail has turned black. I don't know if that's good or bad. Will keep you posted. Paddy is very concerned he has n't chirped all day. That has never happened. Blessings Bonita

Dear Copperarabian, I can't believe what is happening. Emmy is chewing off the infected parts I watched her do it. I guess that is what she would do in the wild. I don't think I could stop her as soon as I stopped wathing she would do it again. Unbeleiveable! What do you think about it? I've never seen anything like it. Bonita :blue2:

The black nail & if you look closely, probably the end of the toe also, indicates that it has become necrotic (died) and your little friend may lose part of or all of that toe.....there is a pic of one of my birds on a recent thread, that I replied to, showing pretty much exactly what your little guy is going to go through.....in similar situations, as long as the toe dries up & is not suppurating, the nail & if the toe was also affected, both would most likely eventually fall off.....when I was about 12yo, my grandmother had a chicken that had a toe get damaged when the belt of an electric motor suddenly started...my uncle put some kind of salve on it, it turned black & 3-4 days later the toe had dried up and it fell off.....

Good luck at the vet.....

I'd freak out if I saw my bird doing that D: sounds scary to see! I would be finding a way to keep her from biting the toe, if she chews to far she can damage good skin or expose bone.

Do you have access to call a good avian vet? Or even a bird rehab center. Ask what they think of the chewing and if they have seen it before

Good luck, keep us updated :)

Awww Bonita, I'm so sorry. The infection is on it's way out though and Emmy will heal, that's the important thing. I think you'll be amazed at how well she will adapt. I know this has been an awful experience but you're doing everything you can and I'm sure she knows how much you love her. I've known several parrots with missing toes and honestly if you didn't look closely at their feet, you'd never guess. Tell Emmy to feel better soon, she has lots of concerned friends.

If as your vet suggested, Emmy caught her toe & stretched it, think rubber balloon...today, many balloons have a power inside them or are made from a compound that does not easily stick together, but older balloons would often stick together when pulled/stretched, as might happen to veins and/or capillaries in a bird's foot if the bird's weight were to stretch those veins/capillaries, pinching/sealing them & stopping blood flow.....this can happen to a bird's toe(s) when bitten by another bird, even if there is no evidence of broken skin...an infection can start, tissue dies as can the nail and/or part of the toe.....

When I went through that situation with my conure, my vet told me that when necrotic toes just dry up, they will often just fall off with no further damage or infection.....

I am very unlearned. I 'm concerned they only gave 1 shot baytril after cutting thru bone and put some black stuff over the end. WHAT ABOUT INFECTION TILL IT HEALS. She picks at it ever so often , it scares me. Thanks Bonita

When the vet amputated the toe, he probably pulled a skin flap over the joint stub & put a stitch or two in it.....the Baytril injection would have been a suitable antibiotic & faster acting and stronger than any tablet form.....unless there was any active infection in the wound, what your vet did should be enough & the toe should heal up completely in a few more days, if not already.....as long as our birds are healthy, they will usually heal pretty quickly.....

Update on Emmy. She let dad give cheeky rub today and snuggled with his finger. Out of cage a lot today, flying and sitting on widow ledge. She still taking naps to build herself back up. Ate Bean Cuisine like a little pig. Seems she's almost back to normal. Won't let me rub her cheek, was one of her favorite things. I think she blames me some. She's very bright; I took her in and handed her to the man who hurt her. I know in time she'll be loving to me again, right now she's nippy with me. Thanks Again Bonita
